Hurst Shifter Question?
Does any one know the height difference (if any) between the Hurst Short Throw with traditional ball (white or black) vs. the factory shifter?

I just got the Hurst shifter at their offices last saturday and they explained that the one they sell is engineered to very high standards and build. The factory shifter is cheaper to produce and therefore not designed or built to the standards of the Hurst shifter. When you see the two side by side you can easily see the difference.
The Hurst shifter is great; very solid, very precise and the car feels totally different with it now. I highly recommend it; a very worthwhile upgrade.

You can hear a rattle if you're pressing on the shifter; I don't hear any rattle if I'm not resting my hand on it. I hear a sort of chunk sound when shifting into 2nd but that's about it.

rattle and clunk in all gears is typical. Our 2007 mustang with hurst and 2007 c6 with hurst both rattle and clunk. it is b/c there are not rubber bushings. its a race shifter, you have to deal with the clunk and rattle. i put dynamat in the c6 to stop it. the mustang is so loud you cant hear it, esp. when the supercharger spools up! the camaro gets its hurst installed next weekend!

The Hurst shifter is about 6.5 inches to the top of the ball from the console. Sorry, I didn't measure the OEM shifter before I took it out.

I too, had my shifter installed at the B&M/Hurst office this past Saturday. Initially, I was very happy with appearance, much shortened shift-throw and positive feeling of gear engagement. Then was turned off by the excessive, constant and annoying shifter rattle noise in the lower gears when accelerating hard. I normally rest my hand on the shifter knob between gear shifts and I thought that should keep pressure on the shifter and help reduce the noise.
I read here an hour ago and the noise is less if you don't rest your hand on the knob so I went for a quick drive and am happy to report that the noise is greatly reduced when you keep your hand off it when accelerating hard. I LOVE the hurst shifter! It should have been the 1st mod I did on this car. It takes shifting to a new level. |

its bad to hold the shifter. wears things out. HANDS OFF, let it move about if it wants too.

Important questions: "Is it quiet?" "Does the Hurst shifter have hard neoprene bushings?"
I recently upgraded to a short throw shifter in my non-Camaro. I LOVE IT! It's silky-smooth, precise and, most importantly - reduced the throw by over 50%. BUT... the hard bushings create a direct path for vibration to enter the interior. It doesn't rattle; it just creates an "amplifier" for all the stuff you don't necessarily want to hear. The first time I turned the key, the sound of the starter was so loud I wasn't sure I was in MY car. I can now hear the sound of the engine and where I used to faintly hear the exhaust tone from the rear of the car at 80 MPH, I now hear it loudly coming from "everywhere" at all speeds. I can hear the engine and every noise from the transmission (not a very pretty sound.) Thankfully a replacement is in transit - live and learn! So... be careful with an aftermarket shifter. Sound may be the last thing on your mind, but it may be important to you. |

I didn't notice that much "other" noise when we put the hurst in our 2007 GT. It is a tad louder since the rubber bushings are gone but didn't notice all that other stuff you talked about...

Seriously though, when I test drove a Roush Mustang Stage 3, I absolutely loved the shifter. |
