OnStar is a joke. Great for thieves to know, just park the car in a covered garage, can't be found or accessed.

When I was doing customer service for GM, OnStar was just getting going. They put the Customer Relationship Managers, (CRM's) who couldn't hack it talking to angry dealers and customers over to OnStar as most people felt they were talking to an automated idiot, which was pretty close.

If I don't drive my car for a couple of weeks the app stops working as well.

In the scenario where you couldn't unlock the car via the app, did you try calling 1-800-onstar and have them try to unlock it? That would help determine if its an app issue or if onstar turns off or if the signal couldn't get through.

The Onstar system goes into a "sleep" move between 48-120 hours after key off and RAP times out. In this state the Onstar system will do nothing until the key is cycled and the system wakes up.

thiggin2 is correct. The hardware is designed to conserve the battery power, after a certain amount of time the hardware in your vehicle goes into a conservation mode, or a sleep cycle.

Knowitman & Jims73z,

I'd be happy to review your account to ensure everything in connecting properly and answer any questions. Can you please send me a PM with your contact and OnStar account information? Thanks!

So when its in this state, it would not be possible to remotely unlock the car, whether through an Onstar advisor or the app? Just want to make sure I understand.

flyinlow,

When requesting an unlock we can attempt to connect if the vehicle is in this mode, if unsuccessful then the Advisor will set up Roadside Assistance to your location. I hope this helps!

I recently asked the question: what happens if the car is in a long term airport parking lot, then someone drags it up on a rollback . . . 'gone 60 seconds'?

The Onstar tech dept. answer: after about 48 hours, the unit goes into a sleep mode to reduce current draw on the battery. They now have methods to 'restart or waken' the unit so it can send and receive signals.

I went out of town for work last week and didn't want to risk losing my keys two states away from my car so I also left the keys hidden inside my car and planned on using the app to unlock the doors. When that failed I called onstar and they said that after 2 or 3 days the car goes into sleep mode to save battery power. Since the car was in sleep mode they couldn't access the onstar system in the car so they contacted road side service and sent someone out to unlock the door with a slimjim. Hopes this helps others who are planning to go out of town and leave their keys locked inside the car like this.

Update the app.

Go to the app store / play store and make sure its updated.

Onstar released the new version of the app and it was buggy as hell.

A couple updates later and it works fine again.

Never had a problem with OnStar....

You guys are idoits. Who locks both sets of keys IN the car?

That's just plain dumb if you ask me. I can understand one set. But keep the backup set at your house or at a trust friend/family house.

Some of you need to update your OnStar apps. The screen shots are of old versions.

Another good tip. Use it once in a while.

I usually use the app to lock/unlock once a month so I know it works. And I like to see the oil life and other data.

To my knowledge you have to cycle the lock/unlock feature from the app just one so it will work when you need it.
