which supercharger - KB or Maggie?
I have done some forum searches, but maybe I just haven't hit the right search words- so I apologize if I am bringing up an old subject. I do suspect that the issue of which supercharger provides the best performance has been debated before.
I am soon to purchase a supercharger, and plan to get either the Kenne Bell 2800 or the Magnuson 2300. I've seen many opinions as to which is better, but have not seen actual numbers that would make the choice obvious. The challenge is separating the supercharger from other modifications. Maybe the performance actually depends on the other modifications too much to compare just the air pump? My original plan was for the Maggie, but recent posts about the KB have me wondering. However, a couple of the big boys (Callaway and Lingenfelter) have chosen the Maggie, which makes me think that this is the best choice. Does anyone have some links that provides definitive data? |

I'd go with the Kenne Bell because it allows for more modifications. Say at some point you want to install a forged rotating assembly (418 or 427), the TVS is not going to handle it.

I think the KB will have more headroom, but it will depend on what your intentions are. If you plan on going racing, all-out, maybe the KB is for you. I believe I read an article a couple months ago on a 2.8 on a forged 6.1 HEMI and it put down 1030 FWHP on like 24 psi. I believe it was finally topped out, because there was only a few horse' difference from 22 to 24 psi or something. If you're only going to run a maximum of 12 psi, I really don't know that you're going to see much of a difference. Without getting apples-to-apples comparisons, I don't think there are many conclusions we can draw - yet. We haven't seen but a couple KB cars out there, and the couple that do are making, what, 560-580 RWHP with a CAI (or upgraded filter), about 8 psi and custom tune. It's pretty much fact an LS3 TVS 2300 car will make 500 RWHP, through the completely stock air box and 6-7 psi. CAI seems to bring RWHP up another 20, or so, RWHP, so add a couple more psi, and it seems we're pretty d@mn close. I think it can really go either way. Maggy cars have been proving themselves for a while now; I believe the KB cars are certainly putting up a good fight. It'd be nice to have the comparison I think many of us are looking for, but sadly, I don't see it happening.
I really don't think you can go wrong either way if you're looking to make around 600 RWHP - beyond that, I'd like to see more info'. |
