automatic-shifter button sticks problem

I have a 98 Camaro 3.8 with the automatic transmission. It is not my daily driver, but whenever I go to put it in gear, alot of times the button on the shifter sticks. It dosen't want to go down, so I have to pound on it for a while and then it finally works correctly. It seems to especially have this problem after sitting for a few days. Do you guys have any idea on how to fix it?

My DD '98 has the same problem.
We took it to a dealer who took it apart and pulled out a few things from the shifter (mainly junk that had gotten in there somehow). That worked for about a day...

Just know you're not alone in this.

Grab a new one from ebay, they're cheap. Easy enough to replace too.

Does the stock shift knob just unscrew? Its at the shop getting inspected today so the mechanic is going to take a look at it for me too. I'll let you know how it turns out.

There is a staple-shaped piece of plastic directly on the front of it, facing the radio, kinda down by the base of the knob. With the car off and the key on ACC, shift it all the way down into first (emergency brake on of course). Grab that badboy with a pair of needlenose and pull it out. Don't break it. Once that's out, pull up on the shift knob and it'll come right off. Super easy, you can probably do it yourself and forego the shop altogether.

My sister's 98' also does that and she's always hitting it too. It's pretty funny to watch. I have no idea how to fix it though.
