Something that really helped me to increase my incline bench is using dumbbells and bringing them all the way down to touch my shoulders. It builds up the power for your liftoff really quick. Also proper posture is important. When I incline the only parts touching the bench are my butt and back of the shoulders. Sit on the edge of the seat and before you lean back squeeze your shoulder blades together like your trying to crush a can between them. Back straight and use your core muscles to keep it straight through the lift. Don't use the foot rests if the bench has them. Feet should be flat on the ground inline with your hips. |

Damn that sucks. Injuries are the worst. I know my back is probably going to go out pretty early in life with the weight I've put on it in the last 10 years. I'm only 25 now but it's seen some abuse. At least your keeping active and doing what you can!

I turned 51 this year and I've put a lot of wear and tear on my body: HS football, martial arts, excessive college drinking.

Flat bench requires more core stability. You're using more muscle groups to exert a concentrated movement. Incline will have more muscle isolation. Quote:

I spend 10 to 12 hours a week in the gym. I feel like crap if I go more than 2 days in a row not working out.

I never did the whole sports thing really. I wish I did but in Highschool I just wasnt into it. I was 6'2" my Freshman year and was over 6'5" by the the time I was a sophomore. I always had the football coaches all over me to play but I never did. One of my biggest highschool regrets now. I played Lacrosse senior year but thats it. I loved working out and took full advantage of the weight room in HS but just wasnt into sports at the time. I didnt do the whole college thing so no college ball either. I do know about the excessive drinking part though lol glad to have left those days behind me |

Lol I know but its kinda too late for that now. I already had my injury 8 years ago and that screwed me up for my flat bench now since I never got it fixed. It was a stupid decision but gotta live with it now.

lol I hear ya, same here. I hate that. There is no such thing as feeling 'normal' anymore. There is 'post workout exhaustion', 'next-day soreness', and 'inactivity stiffness'.

Na its all good. I can still do everything I need to do. The only thing I have a hard time with on flat bench is with a barbell. It holds my arm in a bad angle and can make my shoulder pop out with too much weight. I can do dumbell flat bench no problem cuz I can re-position the angle of my arms.

I went last night and go about 5-6 days a week. I too am military and have the luxury of going on base but I live off base so I enrolled in Golds Gym for times I feel like working out after normal working hours. I try to incorporate many different works and try to do muscle confusion I don't want my body to become complacent.
I bench 365lbs atleast twice a week to maintain where I'm at. Never really maxed out to be honest, never really cared. Last edited by FINALLYSATISFIED; 10-18-2012 at 07:26 PM. |

Day 2 of successful power walking with my 25# sweat suit and later going on an 6 mile short jog. I am back in commission. My stomach didn't act up today either.
