Question in cam power
I have a friend that has a 2012 camaro has headers, CAI and cam. Before the cam he was making like 416rwhp and after he was making around 460rwhp. (his cam is the biggest you can go without flycutting)
My question is, is 50rwhp really good or is something wrong? Seem like thats not much power for a big cam. whats the average gain in cams? |

Hard to say really. What was his baseline power before anything was added? I just got mine back from Vengeance tonight. Gained 90 rwhp over stock. The tune has a LOT to do with it.

416 with headers and cai sounds really high but it all depends what cam u run. Do u know what the specs are and who makes it ? That gain doesn't seem right tho from 416 prior ...

He has a tune on it too. I don't know the specs it was a custom grind. He said the guy does this cam a lot.

I have a 231 / 243 in my m6 and it kind of sucks to drive with the stock gears. I love the sound of the cam and the power it makes once it gets moving so now I'm going with 3.73 gears and a supercharger. I guess what I am saying is you may consider gears with that large of a cam.

Was the cam degreed when installing? Most shops install dot to dot, and that may or may not be degreed correctly. Always check. Also, most use a preselected pushrod length and that is a guess as well. You can't guess on the proper preload and push rod length to achieve this, has to be the last thing measured for.
All will effect the power made from a cam swap. |

A gain of 50 would be pretty good actually.
Remember a dyno is a tool used to measure so, "what he had coming in and coming off" are going to be quite relative. Gaining 50 is about the norm for most regular/mild swaps. You can drop a LS9 cam in, get 20/25 all day long while you could drop a G6X3 or one of our SWS II's in and see 75/80. Tuning will make all the difference in "max effort" cams and thats where you'll see the difference of a "I only made 50" as opposed to "I hit 500 rwhp!" Remember, those two statements above, can actually mean the same exact thing as well. Baseline, reference, and measuring stick. That's what were talking here when we are dealing with Before and Afters. GL and let us know if you're ever needing more help. This is what we do well. Ivan @ Southwest Speed |

416rwhp on a M6 car with LTs/intake/tune is about were it should be. Mine makes 411.

The after cam numbers seem fine too. A lot depends on specs and tuning, but generally cammed LS3 cars with all the bolt ons will end up in the 460-470 range on a dyno jet. Here's a link to a car we did showing similar numbers. Cold air intake, Kooks longtubes, underdrive pulley and custom cam. Fantastic power gains and stock driveability! 2010 LS3 Custom Cam |
