Wrapping the Shark Fin
I'm going to be wrapping my roof in gloss black soon and suddenly realized I'll need to do the shark fin as well. Having never wrapped anything before, I'm not sure how flexible that stuff is. I'm pretty confidant of my ability to do the roof. My question is for those who have wrapped intricate pieces before:
Is it possible to wrap the fin understanding I'll likely have a full top to bottom seam, specifically on the rear of the fin? Or will it have to be two separate pieces with a seam along the entire top/rear of the fin?

Practice on something else first...the fin will require a lot of skill, one piece on the whole thing starting at the top and much heat treatment will be necessary.

I think you're actually going to need a decent size piece to get that done. One of the things I learned is that to get the wrinkles out you need to stretch it over the curved areas. You need to actually avoid the curve by creating very straight lines. Not quite sure how to explain it clearly. When stretching the vinyl go over the curve, don't fill it in, then apply heat ~6 inches away from the curve and work it in with your fingers. I used this video as my example and it has worked pretty well so far.

I have watched a couple YouTube videos and it doesn't seem overly impossible if you take your time. I may try it and if I can't get it right, just take it to someone...

The only reason I'm doing mine is that I feel it's ridiculous amount to pay someone. They wanted $800 to do full stripes. Could they have done it quicker than me? yes. I can do it cheaper and I have a bit of patience. As long as I don't waste too much vinyl then I'll be fine.
Good luck.

I'll keep it in mind but I don't think I'll need it as I'll have clean edges to trim against for the roof piece.

Roger that! I was more concerned about a clean cut and not nicking the paint.

If I wanted black gloss, I would paint it because it's an easy part to rattle can paint, clearcoat and polish. If I wanted it Matte black, I would black plastidip it.
Both much easier than wrapping it up. |
