Need advice...
Hello all.
I was wondering if the professionals here could help one of my family members. My son owns a 2010 charger. Wont turn on at all. Completely dead. Now. the last few weeks the car alarm has been going off on its own and we could not shut it off even with the alarm controller. The last few days my son says he would have to turn the key to on a few times before the car would start. This morning the car was doing the same thing. Which is when the key fob was placed into the key part to turn on...nothing would come on at all. no radio, no dash nights nothing. the only thing that would come on when key was inserted was the miles and the ringing sound when the key is in. I thought it might be the battery. so i tried jumping it and nothing. no lights...noting at all. I took battery to auto zone and the guy said the battery is good. so the question is what could it be? alternator? would the symptoms of a bad alternator be a completely dead car? any advice would be great. thank u

Does it have the factory alternator? If so, it is probably the alternator giving out, its 11+ years old if it is the factory unit, and also, it's a dodge...

With the symptoms you describe, it sounds ignition related. I would go for a bad ignition control module or a bad ignition switch. You said the battery tested good, so that deletes the alternator idea. That's where I would start trouble shooting.

Check both ends of the battery cables for loose or corroded connections. I would check voltage on the battery and voltage inside the car. It seems like you should have lights even with an ignition switch problem. I would also check under the hood and under the car to see if you have any damage from mice or other critters chewing on the wiring harnesses.

In all seriousness you have electrical power so that would rule out battery or alternator. Probably an ignition switch issue as someone stated.

thank u guys.
so just so i understand. yes i am pretty sure it is the factory alternator? so since the battery is good....it wont be an alternator issue? it should start even if the alternator is bad? how would i troubleshoot the ingnition switch? thank u!!

Alternator does not come into play until it is running. If the battery is known good, then I agree, there is a cable problem or an ignition problem. If it presents as stone dead, no lights, buzzers, chimes, etc., I'd look at ignition switch or more likely a problem with an aftermarket alarm install, wiring failure or damage. If it shows signs of life, but won't crank, could also be a neutral safety switch type of issue.
Good luck! |

The Chef brought up a good point. Is that a factory alarm or aftermarket? You mentioned having trouble with it. Maybe the alarm has a kill switch function that is causing you grief.

I thought about that. We have been having issues with alarm. It would go off on its own and would not go off. it would go off on its own after a while.
The key fob is really lose when we put it in. what yall think would be a good way of disconnecting the alarm to see if that is it?

Definitely something in the primary circuit of the ignition system.
