My Dealer said that they don't do the stripes them selves. they order with GM and a GM rep comes out and installs the stripes. He said if I didn't believe them I can be there to watch them put it on

Aftermarket items are the responsibility of the dealer. The same with the stripes that are improperly installed. GM doesn't get involved in that. They will not pay a claim if the dealer screwed up the install.
I'm not saying that if the stripes when shipped to the dealer, if they are defective, GM won't pony up. I'm simply stating that most dealers do not have sufficient, qualified personnel to install these stripes properly. Check out the thread about stripe alignment already. Look at all of the complaints that the stripes don't line up at the back of the hood, etc. No one here has to agree with me. I'm just suggesting that your best bet is to have the factory installed stripes or none at all. As far as being grumpy, I didn't like being called a troll by another poster, that's all.

There is no GM rep that installs stripes. It's either a dealer employee or an outside installer/body shop.

I suspect that dealers who have their own body/paint shops will have experienced people who can install the stripes. Dealers who don't have their own shops will send this sort of work to someone who can do the job. I've installed them myself on '77 & '78 Z28s, and it's not that difficult if you follow the directions and take your time.

We had this exact scenario happen we sell Regency trucks and they come with rally stripes in vinyl, some of my customers had problems with chrome wheels peeling as well. Regency was cool about the wheels but balked at handling the stripes, I painted stripes on my customers trucks (3 total) and ate the cost, two of those customer have been back and bought additional vehicles from us and all 3 are still proud to do business with us. Sometimes it hurts to do whats right but in the long run the good karma wheel spins your way is my philosophy. If I carry a product I want to sell it with confidence so my customers can buy it the same way. We trick out lots of GM vehciles with aftermarket wheels and lifts etc these are not coverd under GM's warranty but I warrant the vehicles at my dealership if something goes wrong its only right to di this in my opinion! BTW my guys have templates for the stripes for various vehciles and use a laser lining tool to lay them down. Im not sure what the other guys are doing but we stripe alot of cars and trucks, HHR's etc and dont poof too many up this way. if we do we redo it until the customer is happy!

The dealer installed stripes shouldn't be a nightmare. I rember when the Mustang came out, Ford had the peopel at the dealers trained by Ford reps on how to put them on. From what I've heard GM is doing the same thing. Dealers also can have trained techs come from outside sources and subthe work out like many Ford dealers do with their Mustangs. I don't really see there being a huge problem. But, I'm sure a few people will get a crappy stripe job.

Nothing like throwing a hand grenade or two at the forum
Many dealers have subcontractors install stripes and the like.... In fact if you get tint, an alarm or remote start, even brush guards on your truck, its USUALLY subcontracted out. I used to work for a Car Audio/Detail shop that worked with a LOT of the local dealers for these specific items. The point, don't get your panties in a bunch. Very likely the person installing your stripes WILL be competent, and if they are screwed up, its just vinyl tape, it DOES come off and can be fixed or replaced.

Hi all, I installed stripes for the first time on my Camaro and only had minor bubbles. It's really not that hard. http://www.cardomain.com/ride/382837

Vinyl stripes have been around since at least the late 1970s. My guess is that factory installed stripes will be applied correctly 99.99999999% of the time and dealer installed stripes will be applied correctly 99.9% of time.
It's not like this is some new product. I don't think anyone should worry about getting stripes...factory or dealer applied. |
