Salt Damage on my winter wheels? Weird etching. Pics

I pulled out my winter wheels yesterday and found that all but 1 were covered in this etching. Te wheels were cleaned before put in storage so I'm kinda lost. You can feel the marks and it can be scraped off but the mark goes into the metal. I have tried wheel cleaners and rust removers and even phosphoric acid and no luck. So I'm thinking that a lot of sanding is ahead of me. Any guidance? Metal sanding is new to me.

That's your good ol' road chemical etching alright. And that's why my Camaro is parked in the shop building until the snow goes away and it rains a few times.

Prep and paint may be a better option.

Mother's Ball and Nano Wax Wheel Polish take it right off.

My '08 Colorado had chrome rims with that crap all over it. Took it right off and the wheels polished right up.

Do you really think it would buff put? I scraped off what I could feel but it's in the metal. I have a speed ball and turtle chrome wax and rust remover

Worked on my chrome rims on my '08 Colorado. See no reason why it won't work on yours.

If it doesn't, you've lost nothing.

If it does, you've saved big bucks!!!

Use 3M wet-or-dry sandpaper and a bucket of water to sand out the etching. Use the finest grit that works. Then finish with the Mother's Ball and metal polish as suggested above. It appears the wheels are not clear coated like the factory wheels. The etching will return if road salt sits on the aluminum. You might consider getting the wheels clear coated at a body shop after polishing the aluminum. Good luck.

I've seen worse, and before you jump to repaint or even sandpaper try to fix them with less aggressive methods first.

Start with claying and polishing. In many similar cases I've seen that remedy the problem 100%... if after trying that you still have marks then its time to consider sanding and/or strip and repaint.

This is an excellent testimonial as to why its so important to seal or wax your wheels regularly to give them a fighting chance.

If they are winter wheels, I wouldn't worry about them.
