Broke Oil Drain Plug
Just went to do an oil change on my Camaro, bought a torque wrench to do it in the right way, set it to 18ft-lbs... and the oil drain plug broke off at the head. I now have the nut part separated from the male part, which is still in the hole. I have no clue what my next step is.

The ugly truth is that unless you can get the threaded portion of the plug out of the pan, you will have to replace the pan unless you can grab it from inside. Many other may have other solutions, but I think you'll have to remove the oilpan and perhaps replace it.

Never seen that happen, usually just strips the threads.
Anyway before you go buying punches, left handed drills and/or easy outs maybe you should take it somewhere or have a friend over that is a little more experienced. Impatience or using the wrong tools here could cost you the oil pan and a lot more money.

Sounds like you will have to purchase a screw extracting kit. You can simply find these at lowes or home depot.

I would drill it out... being very careful not to damage the threads in the oil pan.

need to use a screw extractor... or EZ Out
basically drill a hole, the extractor has reverse threads so as you screw it in... it will remove the bolt. RIGHTY TIGHTY!! LEFTY LOOSY!!!! |

You can 'tap' it out with a special drill bit or take to shop and have it done. Might be a little cheaper & easier then replacing the entire oil pan...good luck

maybe it clicked without you feeling it and you kept pulling until it snapped? you've already gotten good advice on how to get the broken bolt out. I'm just trying to keep you from doing it again. there's no way you could've done that with 18 fl.lbs |

another idea on getting the bolt out if the EZ out stuff doesn't work (it should)...
weld a flat bar to the bolt, but not the pan, and twist. good luck. |

WARNING: the Camaro oil pan is aluminum relatively soft and half the melting point of steel, best to have someone with experience remove the remainder of the broken bolt for you, easy task for a pro. It helps to have plenty of work room when the extraction is done to lower chances of making the situation worse.
By the way, the bolt may have been previously damaged before you even started to tighten it; the relatively low amount of torque you put on the bolt should not have caused the head to snap off ... did you see any voids or flaws in the steel at the point it separated? Are you sure you had the torque wrench in the correct plane and turning it with your hands at the correct points on the torque wrench? Ron

Wow, that sucks.. I think an EZ out is your best option.
Just a suggestion, finger tighten your oil pan nut next time, then give it an extra half turn with a wrench. There's no reason to use a torque wrench..

One of the reasons I have a Fumoto Valve. Yes it takes longer to drain but no risk of stripping the threads.
