Dealers won't take your keys. They will tell you there is a recall and offer to change out the key. You simply decline, sign a waiver and are on your way. They will ask you EVERY time you go in though as an FYI. This is protocol, I talked with my dealer today. Keep your keys

I installed a viper alarm last year. How will the dealership replace my viper fob? Or are they completely separate?

To me my key would look cleaner if I just had the key and my viper fob, rather than having 2 fobs with one having the buttons not working.

This is CYA, cant blame them after the last black eye they got. How about they make it push button start then the whole key issue goes away.

If you think about it, this is no different from every other time you've ever turned the car off, as far as the switch is concerned

In my opinion, if you lined up popular offerings from every car maker you could find some way to get the car to shut off while driving by bumping something, hitting something, doing something you shouldn't, etc

Hell when I was 18 I had a 20 year old car, back in 1989. I put my high school graduation tassel on the rear view mirror. I took a right turn and the tassel contacted the steering wheel, allowing me to trap the tassel under my hand, on the wheel, in effect checking my right turn. Should GM have issued a recall for current models that had a rearview mirror? I mean seriously, I could have crashed. And that "problem" was in place for 20 years

If they're truly so worried, they should just design new switches and swap those out.

Every car I have owned has been this way, so why is it all of a sudden a big problem?
GM has been putting ignition switches on the steering column since 1969, again why is this now such a big problem?

Yup, don't see myself rushing to the dealer for new keys and the problem still existing. As the problem sounds like its with the ignition switch and not the key. Good grief, like they have the underwear gnomes working for them...Phase 1 collect underwear, phase 2........., phase 3 profit. Still love my car, but it'd be nice if they do a recall with an actual fix.
