Must have tools and parts for the New Track Rat

I decided to create this thread to provide help and ideas for people that consider or just started taking their car to the track.

I had to learn the "hard way" how much I needed these items during and before a track day. If you are missing a piece or a tool you might miss a session or the rest of the day.

I plan on updating this list on a regular basis and try to add GM part numbers when applicable.

Any additional suggestion and ideas are welcome

1. High performance brake pads. Same size as the Corvette Stingray (not Z06).
2. Race brake fluid.
3. Motive bleeding tool 0108 or 0118
4. Spare set of front and rear rotors. Pick your poison. Not that many options available yet. (front GM 13578082 / rear GM 23353571)
5. Heavy duty impact wrench (min 250 ft-lb) I use Craftsman ID2030K
6. ½ inch torque wrench.
7. Your favorite tool box with wrenches, pliers and sockets.
8. A rubber mallet. Amazing how often I use it.
9. Floor jack and jack stands.
10. Wheel chokes.
11. Caliper piston “spread” tool or C clamp. Try Lang Tools 279 It's Great!
12. A magnetic tray to hold nuts and bolts. I like Tekton 1903
13. Caliper tool , to measure the thickness of you pads and rotors. Try Neiko 01407A
14. Extra wheel lug nuts (GM 9597846) and wheel stud (GM 11588811). If you mess them up during a track weekend you are dead.
15. Extra caliper bleeding nipples (GM 13579453). Happens you are messing up the thread while bleeding your brakes.
16. Brake pad lubricant and brake cleaner spray.
17. Extra brake hardware kit ( guide pin and back plate) - Rear CENTRIC 11762079 (front GM 22813180 / rear GM 22968938)
18. Extra hex bolt that holds the rotor. (GM 11570339)
19. Extra caliper bolts front and rear (front GM 11611085 / rear GM 11570091)
20. Working gloves.
21. Tire pressure gauge with release/bleed valve. I use Longacre 52003
22. Bike pump – the fastest way to add air back.
23. 6 points (NOT 12) 11mm wrench to open the bleed nipple (Found Craftsman on eBay)
24. Extra brake fluid - Started using Castrol SRF and very happy with it.
25. Sterilite® 60 Qt/15 Gal Industrial Utility Storage Tote - You can slide 2 of these without a problem to your trunk + Jack.
26. Large tarp to cover your stuff if it rains.
27. Beaten up long sleeve shirt - some clubs demand it for driving.

Adding the actual sizes used for the lugs/bleed nipples would be really helpful to add to this quick reference and then this needs to be a sticky on the forum I haven't taken delivery of my car. Im familiar with track stuff but not for a Camaro SS. Great list though!

These are examples that have worked well, and held up well, for me:

5. Heavy duty impact wrench (min 250 ft-lb) –– Longacre Impact Gun #68604 with 2 Batteries: http://www.longacreracing.com/produc...es+%26+Charger; Mine has lasted for years now and it shows no sign of dying.

6. ½ inch torque wrench –– Precision Instruments M3R250F: http://www.torqwrench.com/tools/item...kCode=M3R250F;; Whatever you do, get a quality torque wrench, and not the $39.95 model.

9. Floor jack and jack stands –– American Forge & Foundry Aluminum Jack Model 200SS: http://www.asedeals.com/jacks/alumin...apacity-200ss/; ESCO Model 10498 Jack Stands: http://www.asedeals.com/jacks/jack-s...ds-10498-pair/

21. Tire pressure gauge with release/bleed valve –– Longacre Tire Gauge/Probe Pyrometer #53050: http://www.longacreracing.com/produc...auge+0-100+psi; Expensive, but it will save you time, and you'll need it or something like it to get temps for setting camber. It stores all four tire pressures and all twelve tire temps - no more writing each one down as you work your way around the car.

22. Bike pump – the fastest way to add air back –– Cheap, easy, and they never run out of air.

I've never bought a Longacre product at list price, but instead have gotten everything from their refurb catalog: http://www.longacreracing.com/refurb...products.aspx; where prices are noticeably less.

I'd also add to the list:

Brake Temperature Paint - Genesis Technologies Brake Paint #GB7000: http://www.hrpworld.com/store/defaul...en-gb7000.html
Brake Caliper Temp Strips - Alcon #ALC-THS0080X285: http://www.hrpworld.com/store/defaul...strip-kit.html

Together with the manufacturers' recommended temperature range for your brake pads and temperature limit for your fluid, these two items will provide you with hard data so you know if you're under-working or over-working your brake pads and/or your fluid.

A 12-v tire pump as a less labor-intensive alternative to the bike pump.

Can of WD-40.

Two full size spares that will fit anywhere on the car. Better than having a corded tire or an unrepairable flat end your day early.

Half a dozen short lengths of 1x1 pressure treated lumber to put your other stuff on instead of leaving it to sit in a puddle in case it rains. Rain gear and old bath towels.

Small pieces of plywood so that your jack and jackstand use doesn't damage their pavement. Some tracks may actually require this, but it's being a good participant to use them even if yours doesn't.

A tarp to cover the stuff and weights to hold it down.

Windshield cleaner (get the automotive stuff, not house glass cleaner) and paper towels. (And in a pinch, you can use it as a better-than-nothing hand cleaner when you run out of that stuff.)

One more that's worth special mention . . . a checklist so you can cross items off as they're loaded into the car - so that once you leave your driveway to go to your event you don't have to come back to get the things you forgot.

Helmet and tech sheet are probably the two most important ... (especially if the organization requires completion of tech sheet by mechanic/shop and doesn't have spare blanks on site).
