My SS 1LE axle research so far...people tracking, come on in.

First off, I had help from two members on here, not sure if they want to be named, so I won't, but thanks fellas.

I was looking into the axle situation as with tracking I want to make sure I have some good axles behind me. I have broken axles in the past, and even with a warranty, it's not fun...and a few on here have broken the right side (thinner) axle, on 6th gens already.

I have found out a few things so far:

1) All SS's seem to have new part numbers for both axles starting for 2017. As to why they got new part numbers, not sure. Could be just a simple supplier change, or maybe they were improved, no idea yet, but the part numbers did change.

Old part numbers: 22972610 and 22972611
New part numbers: 84127436 and 84127437

2) The SS 1LE does have a different right side axle part number than a regular SS. This seems due to the sLSD being wider on the right side, and therefore the right axle needing to be a little shorter. Shorter axle = better axle, but as of now I have no idea if GM made this axle any beefier. I would hope so, as the percentage of people tracking these cars will be higher, but I don't think we will be able to confirm until someone takes delivery and we can have them actually look and take pictures that we can compare.

Part number for this axle: 23312004

3) The ZL1 does have it's own set of axles, presumably much stronger due to that cars added torque.

Part numbers for the ZL1 axles: 23287051 and 23287052 (might be replaced by 23287053).

4) The part numbers for both the SS 1LE and ZL1 eLSD match. The actual diff, gears, cooler, housing, flanges, etc, all match. This is good news as if this stuff can cope with a high torque ZL1, a SS 1LE should be a piece of cake. But, the best thing about this is this means that the ZL1 axles should be a direct swap on a SS 1LE as they both share this exact eLSD and a shorter right axle. But, they will not work on a regular SS.

So, what is my plan? If we can confirm that the specific right side SS 1LE axle is not just shorter, but a little larger in diameter than the regular SS axle, I will be good with that. But, if we see that it is only shorter, not any beefier, I will do the ZL1 axle swap. My buddy recently bought a SS axle assembly from GM Parts Direct for only about $175, so I figure even the ZL1 axles shouldn't be priced too bad. My guess is discounted pricing will come in for about $500 for the pair. That is nothing for the piece of mind while you are tracking that you have axles that are more than strong enough behind you, and they are also OEM parts.

Long read, but I figure those of you who will actually be tracking these cars may be interested in this.

Got the MSRP on both ZL1 axles...

23287051 - $358.59
23287052 - $327.60

Figure through GM Parts Direct, or if your dealer likes you, getting at least $100 off each of those. Which puts them under $500 for the pair, like I was hoping...and a great deal on heavy duty axles.

Another reason for asymmetric rear axles is to help prevent wheel hop during hard launches...

Yup, the left axles are noticeably larger on all 6th gens...

Great info SS, I appreciate that you dug into the parts bin for us. I don't plan on replacing anything until it snaps but I'm sure I'll re-visit this thread after that happens.

I'll be tracking mine 6-8 times per year at Daytona, Sebring and Palm Beach.

Also AutoX 10-12x's year.

Where in Fla are you? I'm in Orlando.

I used to use that school of thought. But it seems like when things break, it can cause other things to break as well. I've been there done that lol. I like the piece of mind now. I still will need to look into if the SS 1LE specific right side axle is any larger. If it is, great...if not, I will look into the ZL1 axle swap after break in.

East coast, near St. Augustine. I go to OSW dragway a lot though, as I am a drag racer at heart. But I used to do autoX back when when I lived in NY. This car will get me back on the autocross track. Where do you run autoX?

The Central Florida SCCA has 25 events a year starting in February and runs through November.

http://cfrsolo2.com/

There is also a CFR PDX chapter that does 6-8 events a year.

http://www.cfrpdx.com/

We have a couple of 6th Gens at AutoX and one '15 Z/28 at PDX pretty consistently.

Be great to see you out there some time.

After I get my car, and put on the break in miles, we will talk for sure!

I haven't ordered one yet (later this year or Jan.) but I definitely plan on tracking mine. If you plan on running Sebring I would highly recommend those stronger axles. If somethings going to break...Sebring will break it!

I'd also recommend you check out Roebling Road Raceway in Georgia. It's West of Savannah (Pooler) but several car groups run track days there throughout the year. It's a great track and a lot faster than people realize for just a little 2.0 mile track. One of my favorites in the Southeast.

Yeah, I've been there a few times for the 12 Hours, it's a very old, bumpy track!
