The Y has to be in parenthesis to be 186+... I thought the same thing at one time and found out differently when teching for a land speed run....

My SS has been over 200 and it hasn't left the ground yet... She actually feels very stable... yes we have done a couple of minor things to reduce lift, but no issues... I know of Camaros that have gone 190 with no alterations to the ground effect stuff...

Why is there a Speed Governor

Because there's no such thing as a Speed President.

The speed limiter is there for safety liability issues. The tire on your car is limited in speed and so the car is limited to not exceed the tire rating...

To remove the speed limiter requires work in the tune, and therefore you could loose your warranty in the process...

Man... we have the HKS Speed Limit Defencer in imports. Something that has been around since the early 90s. It basically operates as a "fooler" for the factory speed limiter without re-writing the ECU settings. I'm surprised nobody has done this yet for domestics.

I find it hard enough to find enough room on the highway to go WOT without catching up to obstacles, and sane reasoning states to take it to the track if you want to go all out (don't be an ass on the road for the safety of yourself and others). With enough tracks in the USA, I'm sure they all have track day. Balls of fun and no cops.

The fact I love about my SS is that it has power on tap, and it is there if I need to scoot for a quick second to get away from ass-clowns on the road. Other than that, it's the speed limit.

Can you show me a 2010+ Camaro that's lifted itself off the ground?

The Pzero's are "Y" rated thats 186+ so if the limiter is cause of the tires then there shouldn't be a limiter at all.

young guy, new camaro, doesn't know why there is a speed limiter but wants to remove it. I'll predict we see another "wrecked my camaro" thread within a couple months.

yes, I went there

Please note the scale below off the site you directed us to...

A "Y" rated tire has a maximum rated top speed of 186... not 186 +

Air Pressure/Load Adjustment for High Speed Driving
Recommended High Speed Pressure & Load Capacity Adjustments

For Y-Speed Rated Tires
Vehicle
Top Speed Required Tire
Pressure Increase Tire Load Capacity
% of Branded Maximum Y-Speed Rated Tire
35 psi O.E. Example
mph km/h psi bar % of value branded on sidewall psi lbs.
118 190 0 0 100% 35.0 1000
124 200 0 0 100% 35.0 1000
130 210 0 0 100% 35.0 1000
136 220 0 0 100% 35.0 1000
143 230 1.5 0.1 100% 36.5 1000
149 240 3.0 0.2 100% 38.0 1000
155 250 4.5 0.3 100% 39.5 1000
161 260 6.0 0.4 100% 41.0 1000
168 270 7.5 0.5 100% 42.5 1000
174 280 7.5 0.5 95% 42.5 950
180 290 7.5 0.5 90% 42.5 900
186 300 7.5 0.5 85% 42.5 850

Now note in this chart the "Y" is in ( ) or (Y) indicating 186+ as noted below

Tire prices vary by specifications such as speed rating, load index, and other SKU-level variables. The following are specifications for your selected tire.

Print chart
Tire size Speed rating Load Index Load range Sidewall Uniform Tire Quality Grade (UTQG) Max load (lbs) Max inflation pressure (psi) Approved rim width (in.) Measured rim width (in.) Section width (in.) Outside diameter (in.)
P265/40ZR19 (Y) 98 SL 220/AA/A 1,653 51 9.0 - 10.5 9.50 10.7 8 27.4
P285/35ZR20 (Y) 92 LL 220/AA/A 1,389 51 9.5 - 11.0 10.00 11.4 8 27.9
285/35ZR20 (Y) 100 SL 220/AA/A 1,764 51 9.5 - 11.0 10.00 11.4 8 27.9

Here is the speed designation referenced...

A letter that corresponds with the maximum service speed for a tire. A speed rating isn't, however, a recommendation to exceed speed limits, and doesn't indicate how well a tire handles or corners.
Size speed symbol Service description speed symbol Maximum speed (MPH)
Q 99
R 106
S 112
T 118
U 124
H 130
V 149
(Without service description) ZR Above 149
W* 168
ZR Y* 186
(Y)** Above 186
