I think everyone would agree Roger Smith ran GM into the ground, although he was handicapped by horribly overpaid union labor and legacy costs.

How did GM think that people would go from a 87 Cutlass to a 89 Cutlass LOL

GM sold somewhere in the number of around 1 million RWD cars in 87 and then moved to FWD and had some hold over RWD Olds and buick's that they still had to clear out in 88. I was working at a dealer at the time the mechanics working on the FWD said it was all designed to get more money out of the consumers, and business was good those cars were coming in for more trans issues, computer, and in the winter better not hit any curbs with your Z24 or the front end would get out of alignment.

I had a 1987 Olds Cutlass Supreme 2dr. It was a good car. The drastic downsizing of the 98 in 1983 and Delta 88 in 1987 were terrible decisions. The early 90’s re makes were much better cars, but I think the damage had already been done.

Dropping RWD was a hug mistake and to go from this 85 88 to this 87 88 is just beyond me.

I think Jim & DG could chime in on the reasons. Probably for CAFE I would imagine.

I will never buy any FWD car will stick with RWD or go to 4x4 but working at a GM dealer from 88 to 91 left a bad taste for FWD is was all junk and the cars GM is making now RWD not interested in, as I want more room than they offer I want something the size of a Cutlass.

Cause you know, nothing ever gets better. I can tell you without a doubt cars are made better than they ever were. Sure they are more complex, but overall they are lasting much longer.

Now that someone else mentioned it, why did everythin in the late 80s early 90s start switching from RWD to FWD?

Some may say that it was government C.A.F.E. requirements or fuel mileage but in my mind it was car manufactures finding a way to get the public to trade up sooner.
My dad would try and get his new car to last 8 to 10 years (Scottish mother LOL) his last GM was a 81 Cutlass and he did get 10 years out of that car.

In the late 80's GM got rid of all the RWD full frame cars for cost saving in the building of the cars as well as durability, in my view the old cars lasted longer even in the rust belt that I call Ontario.

In my auto experience I have had 15 RWD, 7 FWD and 1 4x4 truck so with that in mind I can guaranty you that I have put more money into the FWD cars and Vans that I have had in the past, some of the RWD cars were bad like my 90 Mustang was the biggest POS that I have had but close behind was a FWD 96 Grand AM and a FWD 03 Windstar (Windsuck) From now on all my cars will be V8 RWD or in the case of my last a 17 4X4 Ram

Having had both, unfortunately the Quad 4 Cutlass Calis was faster than the V-8 Cutlass Supreme.
