I lived in California for 9 years and had a radar detector in all my cars. They are legal to operate in the state of CA.

I guess it kind of depends on the mood of the cop that stops you.

So where is the black market where all these confiscated radar detectors are sold?

The way I have read this before is that Radar is under control of the EPA and that there are no Controls for Laser.

So can you have a a Detector in VA that only works for Laser?

I was coming back from an out of state trip and did not take mine down and got a $25.00 ticket, but he wrote the serial number down.

No problems in MO. They dont care. Dark tint on the other hand is a no go. Locals cite you if they wish. Troopers will hand you a scraper and make you peel it off the front windows right on the spot....

And after you peel off the tint, do they keep it or do you?

It's been that way for 40 years, I doubt they are embarrassed about it.

The real kicker about Virginia is that going 80 is a reckless driving charge and carries about the same sentence as a first-time DUI. In Texas, not going 80 in the left lane will earn you a finger or two.

I lived in the DC metro area for a little. It sucked. I had to pay state tax no matter where I lived, cops don't give you a break in Virginia, and DC and Maryland won't let you carry guns despite the abundance of thugs that live there. Pick your poison.

There are much worse things that can happen than getting your detector taken away when being pulled over.
