What's the reason for taping off stripes?

Before detailing this week I watched a video from Adams about how to treat vinyl stripes. Most of it references matte black stripes, but toward the end they said that the gloss grey metallic stripes (which I have) can be waxed and glazed with the same product you use on painted surfaces. It also had a disclaimer stating, "Sealants, Waxes, and Glazes are all safe to use on the gloss stripes, just tape the edges first."

What is the reason for taping them off. Does this only apply if you're using a machine, or can they be damaged from hand-waxing?

I haven't waxed my Camaro since installing my stripes, but I'm guessing the reason some recommend taping off your stripes when waxing is to prevent wax residue from building up on the edge of your stripes.

That and possibly preventing the wax to get onto the paint if already waxed.

You also may rip or take a small chunk out of them. That is if you are using DA polisher.

I used a detailing brush to remove any buildup I got on them.

wax residue. vinyl stripes may start lifting after time due to wax build up.
