CBC NEWS Article:Canadians pay more than Americans for Canadian-made vehicles

Canadians pay more than Americans for Canadian-made vehicles.

Consumer advocates say the Competition Bureau should investigate why Canadians are paying thousands of dollars more than Americans for vehicles manufactured here in Canada.

CBC News looked at the relative prices of 24 models made in Ontario by the five big automakers — Ford, GM, Chrysler, Honda and Toyota — and found that in 18 cases, the models cost thousands of dollars more to buy in Ontario than in the United States, including Hawaii.

U.S. car dealers refusing Canadians illegally, prof says

Automakers are breaking U.S. law in order to prevent Canadians from buying cheaper cars there, according to an Ottawa trade lawyer and anti-trust expert, by ordering their American licensed dealerships not to sell new cars to Canadians.

I'd sure like to know why! It's honestly rediculous. My 2012 1LT RS (new) cost me 36 grand after tax and that is WITH the GM employee discount, otherwise it would have been 39k

Maybe because they're considered import?

Doesn't make any sense.

Do they ship them back to Detroit for final testing or are they lot ready in Oshawa?

They leave Oshawa for dealer lots, so they're ready then. No final testing anywhere...

Doubt it. Not unusual. I've been to Japan, and the price of electronics (Sony, Fuji, etc) are considerably less there than here. Maybe not 20-25% like in this car case. But it's still cheaper than purchasing in the States.

I think the Canadians should lobby to have all the plants moved to the U.S....then they could buy the cars cheaper...After all, isn't that why the U.S. has everthing made in China? Same principal!...lol

Everest,
this isn't something new. This has been going on for years where us Canadians are being ripped off.
The car companies have it down to a science.I would have purchased my vert in the USA for about $5-6000. less, but GM Canada does not honour the new car warranty for a period of time/mileage after purchase if the car is brought back to Canada.Same goes for the other manufacturers as they have a similar policy in place.
I also recall reading sometime ago , that USA dealers that sell cars to Canadians can have their dealers license revoked by the manufacturer.

The US has much more purchasing power than Canada. The US has 10 times the population, hence more consumers buying more product.
Would you not give a customer a better price overall if they were buying 10 times the product, compared to the guy that only wants one?
I know it sucks for us Canadians, but I don't foresee any changes.
