Turbo kit vs build

I see a lot of posts asking about turbo kits and what not. I got to thinking, if someone had reasonable knowledge about turbos, it would be immensely cheaper to just build a turbo setup, other than the tune, rather than pay 6 grand for one plus install, right? Not that I have this knowledge of turbos or anything, just saying.

I'm actually very interested to see responses. Haven't contacted anyone but I can't put down 6-7k on a turbo. Now if a custom one could be had for about 3-4k. Sold! Lol

Yes, it would be cheaper. You need the turbo(s), piping, connectors, scavenge pump (if you mount the turbo below the oil pan). You can get a very nice turbo for a grand. As far as I am aware, PT_killa built the first DYI super charger and the first DYI turbo for the LLT. It can be done, it just take time and a little know how.

$1k for just a decent turbo only is what he meant. Not a complete DIY turbo kit.

Yes, that is just for the kit. You still have to buy all the other stuff and do some welding, get tubes rolled and bent, setup a oil-return system, plumb cooling water to the turbo(s), etc... It will be a lot of work.

Oh okay gotcha, I was fixing to say why isn't everyone doing this! haha but I'm willing to spend $$$ for a good quality twin turbo setup
