SS FASTER THAN 1LE?

You'll have to excuse me, I'm a NOOB. I've seen it in many different places that the SS is faster in a straight line than the 1LE. Is this true? If so, why? Just curious.

That was my thought as well. Is there a weight difference?

I doubt there is much difference. You could argue that the 1LE might be a tad slower due to wider wheels/tires and more beefed up suspension. MRC is heavier that standard shocks.

However you are talking about a negligible difference. The slight weight penalty is 100X made up for in its track and handling increase capabilities. Mostly from increased ultimate grip and MRC that is specially tuned on the 1LE.

until recently the 1le was only available with a manual, so most tests with the 1le were with a manual, and many test with an SS are automatic.

If both have the same trans, they should be near identical, if anything a slight edge to the 1le because of the tires. Any variation in times is more likely due to differences in driver.

Without any "proof", I would guess the A8 SS is faster in a straight line than the 1LE. Thats about it though. The 1LE has the eLSD, and that might help get it off the line faster in an m6 vs m6 race. But the auto will edge it out no doubt even with the best manual driver in the 1LE.

Negligible differences, not something worth debating imo.

- Extra weight (depending on the equipment package of the SS of course)
- more rolling resistance with the beefier wheels/tires

Actually, when I was looking into getting one of these cars, the magazine tests I read (motortrend, car&driver, etc- I must have read them all) actually said the 1LE was faster in a straight and attributed that to the tires and differential.

I'm sure that if there is a difference, it is negligible. Thanks for the responses, guys.

Id say that is a valid statement, but youre talking 1/10th of a second due to the downforce of the 1le if even that in a 1/4 mile i.e., 12.4 vs 12.5.

What you're hearing might be the difference between a 1LE with a manual vs a SS with an auto. The auto transmission is faster in a straight line.

It's not the 1LE package, it's the difference between transmissions.
