Camaro SS tires giving headaches, tire shop clueless

Hey guys,

I have a 2018 6MT SS, recently the rear right tire went flat (drove over something while cruising on the highway), went to Les Schwab and they replaced it with the same tire that was on there 275/35R-20XL 102Y Extreme Contact DWS06+. After replacing it, when I took it on a drive, whenever I floor it, the car starts pulling towards the right.

When I am cruising, not really stepping onto it, the car goes straight as an arrow. IT ONLY Pulls towards the right when I step onto it. I come back and explain the symtomps to Les Schwab and they swap the new RR tire with the Rear left one. (Rear left one has 80% tread remaining). So now the brand new tire is on the rear left while the one that has 80% tread remaining is on the rear right. Now when I go for a drive, the car starts pulling towards the left when flooring it.

Les Schwab then deemed the difference in tread being the decisive factor and asked me to replace the rear right tire as well. So now, I have both rear tires (brand new), and now the car is pulling towards the right upon flooring it.

I am stumped. Any insight?

Check the alignment…

Yeah, I would get the car on an alignment rack.

Swap em again. If the pull moves, it's tires. If it doesn't, alignment.

Sounds like REAR TOE IN adjustment is out of whack. DEFINITELY alignment. The alignment shop accidently left my toe rods loose one time and my car was all over the road under acceleration but was fine just cruising.

This is where my brain goes, too. If one tire is appreciably more worn than the other, it's going to mess with the traction control and such and could definitely be throwing things off if the car is reading enough of a difference in RPM's between the two wheels...

Dumb question, but couldn't Les Schwab have shaved your new tire if tread was the issue? Surely shaving a new tire to 80% would be cheaper than buying another new tire?

Next time I get harassed for doing a huge burnout, I’ll just tell the cop I was doing tread shaving to even then out.

I like ember's idea.
I would see what happens with traction control turned off. This might be alignment. But I think it's possible the car is sensing some unevenness under hard acceleration and applying selective braking.
I'm going to assume you didn't drive on the flat tire and bend the rim, and that it trues up OK on the spin balancer.

What did you run over? Something large that caused more damage than a flat tire?

My theory: The new tire is slightly bigger so it will turn faster because the axle is turning both wheels at the same speed.

Possible, but you also need to know tire pressures for the two tires.

He's replaced both tires on that axle but ya otherwise not knowing what he ran over, could it have knocked out the tire and given him a flat...I'm wondering.

At this point it sounds like both rear tires are new. One would hope that they are both at correct pressure. I wonder if the wheel was damaged (as previous posts suggest) or first new tire has a flaw that is causing the pull since it seems to move with that wheel and tire.
