Camaro SS: All Out Bonneville Unlimited Speed Test
As featured on CAMARO5 HOMEPAGE.
Ok, so we wouldn't exactly call this one a fair race based on factory specs, but nevertheless it's a fun look at how these two hot American muscle cars perform with their speed limiters removed and unleashed on the Bonneville Salt Flats for some top speed runs! Popular Mechanics recently undertook this unique challenge. Read their results below: Quote:

Wrong forum Admin... ... and nothing here I haven't already seen. Waiting for a REAL comparison one of these days.
You said it best... specs weren't even close... would love to see a real comparable base model used. But none the less, the SS held up far better than it should have outweighed like that.

Excellent read! Why compare cars with a 110 +/- hp difference.. Its like Apples to Oranges.... Should have either gone with the GT or waited for the Z-28..

This makes me wonder how a regular GT would perform compared to the shelby... although I think the Camaro would win. Theoretically, higher horsepower means higher top speed, am I right?

Sure it said "Vs." but other than where the author commented about the Camaro's suspension was more comfortable, there was no face to face comparison. It says in the article that the GT500 is faster as it should be for a car with 100 more HP and the same weight. No one who knows anything about cars or physics in general would have expected the Camaro to go faster. If the outcome is already known, how can you make these two cars compete?

I believe the SS would run a faster top speed than the GT. |
