LS7 Lifters

What's up guys

I dropped a big Thunder Racing cam in my car about three months ago and under the advisement of TR did not upgrade the stock lifters.

Pretty sure one has gone bad on the right side. It's making a lot of noise and feels like timing has been pulled from the motor. I might be able to get a set of LS7 lifters from a dealership in town if they have them in stock and was wondering if anyone has used these in an ls3. I know all the LSx motors share common traits but want to make sure before we dive in.

The reason why Thunder did not recommend new lifters is because your stock ones are the same LS7 lifters and could not have had many miles on them.

Sweet. We didn't think that 5k miles would be enough to develop a wear pattern but apparently it was or that one little guy was just a bum lifter from the factory.

Thanks for the help just wanted to double check.

Look into the CTS-V lifters they have a ceramic check ball and are a sweet upgrade over LS7 lifters

Depending on how big the cam is the LS7 lifters work well. I've run them up to .660lift Cams reving to 7400rpm. The CTS-V lifters are suppose to be stronger but I blew 3 of them apart and went back to LS7 lifters.Could of been a bad batch though.

The only lifter I would upgrade to is the Morel link-bar its a true Hi performance lifter none of the others are, in fact the caddy is tiny compared to the rest of them and has casue more heart ache than good. The valvetrain needs to be properly matched.
It comes down to the cam profile and springs you chose.
We see LS7 lifters develop a tick and some of them fail all the time with the use of aftermarket cams and springs.

This is an LS7 lifter which is bigger than a caddy lifdtr compared to a Morel.. the Morel uses better materials and has a bigger pin and wheel.

The one of the left is the Morel Hi rpm micronited $700 lifter. The middle is the Morel 5206 most common used lifter and the right is the LS7 lifter. We only like to use the link bars, its a better systen than the lifter trays gm uses. Not pictured is the caddy, its smaller than the LS7 by a good amount though and to be honest is never used by us.
What happens to the LS7 is the pin starts to come out and then the wheel fails and then its time for some new parts and maybe even a whole new bottom end.

I was told the same thing about a Crane Cam install once on a new crate engine, never do that again. IMHO - always install new lifters when replacing the cam - less room for failure.
