Long tube headers and Drive clean
Hey all. I'm curious if any Ontario owners have long tube headers installed and have had a drive clean? I have a customer who really wants some but is logically concerned that he may not pass drive clean, especially now that they go by CEL's and don't dyno and sniff anymore.I'd love any feedback on this. Thanks in advance.

Long tubes wont affect the drive clean unless he has an engine light.

From what I understand, with a proper tune that does not throw codes everything should be fine.

We have the emissions side of the tune dialed in. All of our tuned cars have been passing the new e-test without issue.

The Ontario E-Test is a joke now. No sensor, no dyno, nothing. Just plug into the computer and as long as there is no engine or emissions codes either currently thrown or recently thrown, then you pass! Hurray! Oh but wait, you have to pay the E-Test fee. Sound like a government money grab?

The problem is, in order to do this your car requires a TUNE so the rear o2 sensors dont trigger a catalyst inefficiency code/MIL/CEL. Theirs a big down side to this though. GM isn't honouring power train warranty on cars with a tune. Unless you/your dealer is overlooking that!

e-test and warranty
There are a few different strategies that can be utilized when writing a custom tune that is "new" emissions friendly. No dealer should have an issue with the tuning that is required for passing an e-test, but I agree some will. It is very important if you wish to modify your car and it is under warranty, that you maintain a good relationship with the dealer that you purchased it from or you deal with a speed shop (SPI) that has created good working relationships with dealers and can help take care of any warranty related issues for you.
Your service department is your first line of defense between your car and it's warranty. Having a dealer that understands that bolt-ons and tuning do not require cancellation of a warranty is an asset for a gear head with a new car. |

And what is the remedy to pass the etest with an 89 IROC Z28 with a 5.0 l TPI?
So far after 4 tries no go! 3 in 2011 with only a conditional pass if accept to pay 150$ for a BS attempted repair fee which I did 1 in 2013 with now..... no more conditional passes since last month in Ontario.....almost a pass (2/3 categories) |

My guess is the timings way out, needs a complete proper tune up and possibly even a new 3-phase minimum catylitic converter.

But ya he's right, take it to a shop. Preferably one that knows the new program rules. Last edited by gmdoctor; 12-11-2013 at 01:17 PM. |
