Burning smell
Hey guys! 2016 2SS M6.
So, lately I've been noticing a burning smell coming from the car, windows down or up. It only occurs when the car is at a stand still, and is more prevalent when going up hill. My initial thought was the clutch, but after driving around last night with a friend, who has only ever driven manual transmission cars, he said otherwise. He believes the smell is oil related. So we checked the oil pressure and temperature, pressure floated between 30-40psi, and temperature never exceeded 200 F. About 200 miles back I did have an oil change. 10qts of mobil1 full synth, and an AC delco filter. He thinks it's possible that the smell could be from oil spillage on the headers, which would explain why the smell only occurs when the car is sitting still and warmed up. Dipstick reads full, oil color is new. What are your thoughts guys? I'm planning on getting the car up on ramps before I drive it again. Anything I should look for? If a spill is located on the headers, what should I use to remove it? Alcohol? Dish soap? Thanks guys.

This is often caused by some plastic that melted onto your exhaust somewhere.

I’m going to bump this. I’m having the same issue but no clear leak. I did have a pinion seal leak that was repaired. I cleaned off the exhaust (even down to sanding the pipes down) and any residual that was in the area. Condition didn’t change. Not seeing any puddling anywhere. I’ve had it in twice and they don’t know where to start looking or what to do with it but acknowledge the burning oil smell in the car. I just came from service again and me, the tech, and service manager we’re all under the car with flashlights looking for anything but came up with nothing.

Changed my oil again a few days ago. Did not spill any oil anywhere. Same oil as the last change, M1 full synth. Burning smell when stopped has returned. While its not so bad anymore, it is definitely from the oil change as the smell only occurs for me after I change my oil. I must be doing a messier job than I think.
Maybe residue burning off the outside of the PF64 filter? I may have forgotten to wipe it down. gpskinzhut, do you notice it after an oil change?

I’d say it’s from the oil change. Changed mine and spilled the tiniest amount....the funnel moved some during filling. Anyway; mobil 1 is good stuff and does not burn off easily (but will smell). This lasted for at least 1500 miles after the change.

Mine has a smell after I changed the oil. I only assume I made a mess. It will have to stop eventually.

Maybe it is dripping some where. Or oily finger prints on the exhaust.

Anyone ever find out a cause on this? My 2017 has done this since new. Come to a stop or back up into my driveway and I get the burnt oil smell.
First oil change done and still the same issue. We looked everywhere no wet spots anywhere. |
