JRE billet caps

Reading through some threads and came across a question that really wasn’t answered. Do you need the upgraded caps if you go with the LPW cover?

I was also wondering what’s the difference in the two different version of the LPW covers?

My thoughts are that the cast aluminum caps are too brittle and lacking in strength to begin with. Originally I had planned on just the caps, but with the amount it cost to get ALL the parts together to completely overhaul the diff with new gear set, bearings, seals , I decided to use both, there is no such thing as too robust when it comes to trying to help the diffs live whilst launching. Ted said the LPW cover wasn't needed with his caps, but it also wouldn't hurt either.

The difference in covers is that one powder coated the other is not.

I was told it’d be few hundred bucks to machine and install them so I wanted too see what people who have done it multiple times thought you know.
I just figured that out reading lpw’s site might as well have it powder coated for 15 more bucks.

I did the LPW cover without upgrading the caps. I've made 65 passes at the drag strip so far this year with no problems.

Not sure how things are now, but when I ordered mine at the end of last year, the powder coat added something like 2 weeks to what turned out to be very slow shipping to begin with. Maybe they have more of an inventory going now, IDK. Otherwise, be prepared to wait a while.

I’ve heard a few people who say they aren’t needed, I’m planing on ordering the cover from RDP so hopefully there in stock.

I have access to a mill so I was able to cut my billets caps to fit properly, took about 1/2 hour. As you can see from a little research they are not absolutely necessary. If I had to pay to have them machined to fit it is doubtful I would have used them. Like I stated above, for the money I was already spending for all the other parts, and knowing what I have planned to eventually do with my car, I felt the money spent for the caps added to another layer of economical reliability. Good luck with your build, and enjoy.

I was between choosing the LPW cover or the billet caps, and the LPW cover was a better choice in my mind. It provides a similar support that the billet caps do, but in addition to that it gives the case some much needed rigidity. For a similar price point, the LPW cover is easier to install, and provides more benefits. Easy choice for me.

You guys with LPW covers find that it transfers a good deal of gear noise into the car?

I have solid aluminium subframe bushings, BMR "pro" poly in the diff, and with two different sets of 4.10s I find that there is just a good amount of whine coming into the car. I theorize that the LPW, snugged on to those ring gear caps, acts like a giant stethoscope and really transfers all that noise up into the car. I accept it as the price to pay for a rear that stays together, but I sure would love to NOT have it like that.

The Hendrix delrins make mine sing — along with the TruTrac...

Both of these make things noisy...

Hendrix Delrins and LPW on mine. 30k miles on the setup and >1k launches on street and track. Streets here are stickier than the tracks and I break DSS axles before doing any damage to the diff.

I'm lowered on BMR springs in the front and Strange coilovers in the rear. The offset diff bushings made a huge difference in axle positioning so that they stopped binding and breaking as often.
