Grinding Noise, Stall, No AC

Hi, Fellas and Gals.

Been a while since I've been 'round here. Hope you're all well and Happy Father's Day to the Dads out there.

After going to a car wash this morning, I started my car on their lot and heard a pronounced grinding noise through the vents. When the car was new I had this problem albeit a much fainter in sound. As I backed out of my spot and the engine revved up the noise grew louder. I went forward out on the street and the noise became very loud and, after a few hundred feet, the car stalled. At least I had enough speed to coast into a gas station 1/2 block away.

While coasting, I started the car up once again and powered it around the pumps until it stalled once more. After a third start up and backing into a shaded spot I notice white smoke billowing from under the hood. The car was now running and not stalling so I opened the hood. The smell was sharp. The smoke was gone. The car idled fine. Hmm.

Back inside the car all the gages looked normal, however the AC wasn't producing cold air. I drove home 15 miles and the water temperature remaining normal.

I'm thinking that either the car wash left a rag inside, the AC died an natural death or something else happened.

What say you? Thanks in advice for the counsel.

I had my AC take a dump on me a couple after buying my car. GM replaced to complete system. Shaft snapped on the pump and metal debris contaminated the system.
This is a know issue with the 5th Gen and know of a few other guys that have had the same issue.
Key to fixing it is the completed AC system needs to be replaced if contaminates get in the system.

Kurt

Thanks, Kurt. I'm clearly out of warranty at this point.

No dude, waiting to see what the actual cause is. One of the benefits of these forums is we can learn from others experience and sometimes, misfortune. That said, what it's gonna cost is certainly a curiosity..... And you being in the Bay area, I can go ahead an lop off about 20% of what you're gonna spend. Beautiful area, but the costs are out of this world.....

Update: appointment at chevy 7/13. Appointment in town, a week from this Friday. Appointment across town: pending a callback.

This is the Bay Area problem. Too many people. Not enough service stations.

I hope it's something inexpensive Brian. I'm not sure why your car would simply smoke and die just from the AC compressor going out. Maybe it's an electrical issue? Any codes that you could find?

$1,998.60. And it now makes noise like whining turbo on acceleration and a similar noise on deceleration from 3k to 2k. The air is cold. Going to take it on a long drive this weekend and see if the noise abates else the shop I went to said the compressor, condenser and collector are all under warranty.

I kept the broken compressor / receiver to send to chevy. This should not have broken after four years. I got rid of my German S4 due to ridiculously high repair bills like this.

Hey Brain, bummer. I had a weird noise on my way back from Silverstate in May. I had just got gas in Vegas got on the frwy and i dont even know how to describe it, almost like something was banging against the outside of the car but from inside and with no feeling, just noise. Haven't heard it since.

If that is belt noise, you can try putting some belt conditioner on it, but in all honesty it should not make that noise, especially if the belt was replaced. This weekend will be a good test. I hear 100+ temps are going to be out there.

How long is the AC compressor and equipment under warranty for? And why were you charged money if they were under warranty?
