Let me ask a question here.
I'm new to the "market." I'm 19, my first car is a 2010 2SS manual, I have a NJ licence, and I'm in CA, I'm using USAA, as it's the cheapest I found.
I'm paying 175 per month. Geico, all state, and a few others rated me 600 per month(almost), while USAA got for just under 400, but I took off one of the insurances(it was almost 200).
I'm just thinking why is it that expensive?
I have no record, and my credit is just starting. I'm in the active duty military...

okay i have to chime in, insurance wise i lucked out with gieco (even though i hoped not) USAA tried to rape me with $1250 every 6 months (just for the camaro) where as my current insurance is only $600 every 6 months(for both my cars). [a little back history] I got sued in 2005 for $250,000 (yes thats a 1/4 mill) at the age of 16 and that hurts me BUT if you shop around someone will try and help you!

Mine was 485 for a for a full year. I have 2 other vech and am 65. Had to have OnStar so bought the safe and sound and saved enough over my other policy, to pay for Safe and Sound with some $'s left over. Also have a low mileage of 12,500/yr. Last year it was only 354/yr.

@mdipinto I see this happen all the time, reason why yours is high is because young+sports car+beginning credit=high rates. 25 is the golden number, once you turn 25 and all other factors stay the same generally the cost of insurance goes down.
Get a quote for a 2010 focus, elantra, or civic and most likely a car along those lines will give you a cheaper rate.

Anyone in the Dallas (or even not Dallas) area- contact Eric at SIG Insurance Professionals.
He'll shop insurance for you and get you a great deal.

I switched from Allstate to Travelers with him about 1 year ago and saved about 500 with same coverage.

I just referred a friend who had been looking and he ended up getting a great deal as well.

He quoted me 664 annually for a SS.
My wife and I are both fully covered and are 28 yrs old- clean history.

It's cheaper though because I have 2 car discount and have my homeowners policy with them. Both cars covered is about 1200 per year, which is pretty good IMO!

Oh and if interested- I pay 12 per year to have my iPhone fully covered in case it's lost, stolen, or broken. In the event something happens- I get a 600 dollar check to replace it.

Here's my auto insurance mess!

Here's my auto insurance mess! I have a 2011 Camaro 2lt purchased on 9-1-10. I've had 21st Century Auto Insurance (formally AIG) for 11 years, without any tickets, accidents, or any other claims. Changed the policy to the Camaro, no problems. These policies are in 6 month durations. So on 3-1-11, received my renewal notice, with no increases or problems. Well here's where it starts:

Renewal for 9-1-11

1 - Received a renewal notice dated 7-26-11 for $347.44.
2 - Received an "Amended" renewal notice dated 8-1-11 for $467.64.
3 - Received an "Amended - Amended" renewal notice dated the same day (8-1-11) for $485.89

After 2 conversations with a "Supervisor", here's their explanation: There "computer" had the wrong calculations because of the VIN number type. So I said it took you almost a year to figure that out. Answer, sorry. They also said there was insuffient data on the car, since it was a new model. I explained that the car has been in production since April of 09 and that there are over 180,000 on the road. No Answer! Finally the last reason was that it was a "high performance" sports car. I said that it was the 6, not the SS with an 8. Answer, doesn't make a difference.

Said they would give me a 3% discount if I paid on-line. LOL, what a joke!
I have been with State Farm since 1970 when Nationwide dropped me for no good reason when I left the Coast Guard. We have had nothing but good service from them. Wife had a stero/compact disc player stolen from her 86 Corvette, they had to replace the entire sub dash due to the damage done to the mounting fixtures. End cost, over $4000 for a $250 radio, they never blinked an eye and our rates never went up. Your car is worth going with the best. They also give a big discount for multi policy holders. Happy hunting.

I would definitely start shopping around, that's for sure.

I'm with Geico - 2011 Camaro 2SS and I pay $71 a month.

My policy breaks down to $86 a month for my SS through statefarm. When I first got the car last year it was $60 a month.

As stated before not enough market data so the policy goes up. No accidents or tickets either.

I had allstate for about 4 years, I've never had a wreck or have ever had a ticket. Allstate was charging me $160 a month for full coverage on a 2008 Cobalt. I talked to them prior to buying the camaro and they quoted me $200 a month for the Camaro, I know it seems a little high but for my age I was okay with that.

After I bought the camaro and gave Allstate the VIN number, they said "Oh, we're sorry. The camaro didn't register in our system before as an Exotic car, which it does now. It's going to be $400 a month for the Camaro". It's a V6...

Needless to say I immediately laughed at them and called Geico, am now paying $150 a month. Great decision so far

Here's the end of the story:

Investigated 10 insurance companies, with prices ranging from $475 per year (Safeco) to $1121 (Amica) a year.
I went with Nationwide for $656 per year. I got better coverage and a real live agent to deal with. I researched all of the companies online and Nationwide had a real good rating. They did say that in the past they weren't real "customer" friendly, but over the past 10 years, they have been ranked as one of the top 5 insurance companies. I'm sure everyone has their opinion (and I appreciated them all), but I'm happy with my decision.
