z/28 ls7 engine failure
Hey Fellas,
as my titles says mechanic is getting back to me with some pictures of my filter cut apart and what appears t be metal flakes in the filter element and metal dust in the bottom of the filter. Ill update the photos as soon as I get them but hes recomending pulling the engine entirely and planning for either a refresh or complete rebuild depending what we find. Just looking for some insight and thoughts here about what route I should be doing. car is modified and built by Davenport in Calgary Alberta with their 630HP kit https://www.davenportmotorsports.com...rated-package/ at that time the camshaft they went with was the comp cam gt19 spec car has 50,000kms. Im mostly curious if theres some more experienced people with the ls7 here if they have any recommendations , anything I should change while im there, and what parts with the rotating assembly I should change regardless of the condition it may be in. Thank you! |

If you have a high lift cam my guess is lifter failed banging on the cam lob over the ramp. Keep us posted and man I hope I’m wrong

Since im not the original owner or had the car built the way it was, I've had lots of questions about the amount of noise coming from the valve train. In terms of how he car drove before the discovery, Nothing was making any "unusual" noises and it was just me asking for the filter to be cut open after a very short interval between oil changes because I had a 2000mile rally planned for September. It was more luck I just caught it before any of the obvious signs from the car

notice its hard to tell from pics. not a ton of material but definitely looks like metal dust when you shake the filter around in the bottom. This is only after 2000kms so around 1300miles since its last oil change

Have you asked Davenport what may have caused it?

There have been a lot of Comp Cams failures on here in the past. I don’t know when or if they ever got their issues straightened out.

I noticed they dont even offer that cam anymore on their website by the looks of things. I dont much care for the driveability of the car as it was anyways so I intend to change that while the engine is out

If that was my car (after I was done sobbing) I would pull the engine, disassemble and inspect hoping the cause was a component easily replaced. I'd then clean/flush the entire assembly to get any metal out of the oiling system. Definitely need to thoroughly flush the dry sump and related also. I'd go with the GM 570 HP LS7 crate motor cam, Johnson lifters and I'd verify the heads have been freshened up or I'd send them to Katech for updating. I would definitely seek out someone with LS7 knowledge to help me through this expensive endeavor. Sorry to hear about your bad experience but as I have found out with my track Z06 that big shop/names don't necessarily mean top notch work. A facility is only as good as their worst mechanic.

Sorry to hear this. Please keep us posted. I dread this on my stock LS7.

I would not worry. Who say's it will happen. Most stock Z/28 LS7's are rock solid. 50,000, 100,000 miles on some with no issues at all.
