4.5L V8 Turbo Corvette & 2016 Flagship Cadillac Sedan

GM Inside News has an article about a possible new turbo V8 for the Corvette and Cadillac:

http://www.gminsidenews.com/forums/f...-sedan-134369/

"We recently came across some interesting information from a credible source about future products for GM's Chevrolet and Cadillac brands, and which to some extent, are interconnected.

We'll begin with Chevrolet as we learned that the Corvette's immediate future includes a more potent version of the 4.5-liter twin-turbocharged and direct-injection engine that GM debuted on the Cadillac Elmiraj Concept just last month.

We're told that the new V8 will most likely be used in the successor of the Z06, rumored to be called Z07. While in the Elmiraj, it produced an estimated 500hp, in the Corvette, it could push out as much as 600 horses (unconfirmed)."

Sounds interesting!

The Z06 needs to stay N/A but I don't see them getting enough power from a TT 4.5 to make it ZR1 worthy. I hope this is just a rumor.

A twin turbo, DOHC V8 makes absolutely no sense for the track star Z06. It adds weight in exactly wrong spot for such a car -up front and up high. Sure, you might potentially get more low/mid range torque ... but then again, the new LT small blocks are absolutely not lacking in low & midrange torque. There wouldn't be any real fuel economy gains (if thats even a concern) because you'd have to run so much boost to get 600 horses out of a 4.5L engine.

Odds are, this is either intentional disinformation from GM or some guy misinterpreting a piece of information.

As for the Cadillac ... I could see it getting a 4.5L turbochaged V8. Only I'd expect to see it as an oil burner instead of a gasser.

A NA 7L V8 would sound better, IMO. It would also sound better when you let off the gas -no sneezing.

I don't see GM dumping the well established Z06 plate from the Vette for Z07 unless the Z07 would be a new additional model to the Corvette portfolio. z06 should be N/A powered with a higher performance LT1 which would probably be labeled as either LT4 or LT6 engine.

I just remembered something that I heard about the C7.

During development, it was found that a DOHC engine would not fit in the C7 without raising the hood substantially. So they scraped the idea in favour of maintaining the usage of pushrod engines.

Is the 4.5 TT a 90* V8 or what? What is it based on?

I agree on a N/A Z06 but I don't see an issue with a 4.5 TT ZR1. A 4.5 TT will probably make over 650 hp with today's modern tuning and direct injection.

650 out of a 4.5 would be considerably more than any other large displacement factory engine that I've heard of. The problem isn't making the power, thats easy: up the boost. The challenge is emissions. That would be a very difficult issue to tackle, maybe not impossible but it would require quite a bit of R&D to sort out. Meanwhile, this mythical 650 hp TT V8 would only be making 12 hp more than the 'obsolete' LS9 already makes. Something tells me, GM has better things to spend their money on, such as gen V derived LS9 sucessor.

Some thoughts. First I don't believe the next Z06 or Z07 necessarily needs to trump the current C6 ZR1 in terms of power output. Many thought the same regarding the base C7 and the C6Z06. Speculators pointed to the fact that, historically, the Base C6 was on par with a C5Z06 in terms of power (400hp vs 405hp), yet the new Stingray is still at least 45hp short of the C6Z06.

Furthermore, it took 7 years after production ended on the C4ZR1 in 1995 for Corvette to match that power level in the 2002 C5Z06 (2001 C5Z06s had 385hp).

So I wouldn't be too surprised or disappointed if the C7 Z06(7) makes only 575-600hp regardless of the motor that ends up in it.

Also, as fitting as it is for the Z06 to remain naturally aspirated... N/A engines are slowly going the way of the dodo I fear.
