2nd or 3rd gen...what to buy?

Hey guys,

Sorry, I would have posted this in the "Other Generation" forums, but there wasn't an over all forum for that and the 2nd and 3rd gen forums are seperate.

I'm thinking of buying wither a 2nd or 3 gen within the next year or two to work on and have as a "hobbby car" that I will eventually want to take to the track. My wife says "no" to the track for the 5th gen, mainly due to it's value and that I still own lots of money on it, so she can't say "no" to a cheaper car that's 100% paid for!

So my question is, (and I know this is a really broad question) but which, 2nd or 3rd gen, tends to be better/faster, performance wise, stock. I won't want to put huge amounts of cash into making it faster, just restoring it and cleaning it up. As for styling I love both, with a slight preference to the 2nd gens, so I don't really care about that, I'd just wanna get the gen that would be a fastest with the lest amount of work to the engine/tranny.

Thanks guys,

Nick

both cars you can take & put money in to make them fast cars.

I currently have a 71 camaro that is up for sale for 15k(us dollars)
that is set up for a strip car except for the engine thats a crusing engine lol

yet on the other hand the 3rd gens are slightly lighter no matter what you can find parts for them.

but also you can throw a good couple k in to a 4th gen & get one for cheap & do the same thing.

Power parts for all the gens are out there & are easy to get your hands on.

2nd gens are harder to get your hands on, for one that is not rusted out & beat to hell & back. plus value on them is going UP so finding a cheap one is hard to get.

3rd gens & 4th gens you can get even a v6 one & rip the engine out & throw a high power v8 in it. the bodies are cheap both gens you can get a dime a dozen.

Yeah, for most of those reasons I'm leaning towards a 3rd gen, even though I prefer the looks of the 2nd gens.

Never driven a second gen so I would go with a third gen having owned 2. The early second gens have pretty good power but will be pretty pricey if you're not looking to do an extensive restoration. The later the third gen the more power it will have and it should be a little easier to find one in good shape, though nice stock third gens are getting rare themselves. I loved both of mine and would still drive my 92z28 if the motor hadn't blown at 125k. I would still say they're pretty reliable drivetrain wise. After 100,000 all the extra parts start to break, starter, fuel pump, alternator etc.

I'm sure she cooks, but I want one that is as close to stock (in appearance at least) as possible. I love Camaros mainly because of how they look, stock. I'm rarely, if ever, a fan of Camaros that deviate aesthetically from how they look rolling out of the factory.

Oh man, tough call...that '70 is dead sexy, but I *really* don't like the air intake on the hood....that alone would make me go with the 3rd gen. Otherwise I'd take the '70 in a heartbeat...the year I was born!

hood scoops can always be replaced with a lower profile hood, & ITS A 71 not a 70 lol
