Manual SS drivers: anyone have trouble getting from first into second?

Me and the gf test drove a camaro SS for her next car. She's been driving an old 2003 city golf her whole life so it might still take getting used to, but everytime she shifted from 1st to 2nd, she had trouble "finding" it and would go into fourth, and shes driven tons of different stick cars with no trouble.

It was a big turn off for her, but we kinda think she'd eventually get used to it?

Anyone else have this problem?

It's part of the fuel saving BS that GM has put in the cars to avoid the gas guzzler tax. If you accelerate a little bit faster and/or shift at a different rpm than what she's been doing should take you out of that shift skip.

Classic skip shift. A pin essentially locks out 2nd gear if you are traveling at a certain speed with a certain % throttle. I notice it from 15-20mph when I'm slowly accelerating. I usually go from 1st to 3rd as I feel I get the smoothest ride that way. 1st to 4th really seems to bog the engine down.

You can buy a skip shift eliminator. I think there is a how to on installing it.

Yeah. It is total B.S.

I can see somebody eventually getting into trouble with it as they pull in to traffic and find out they can't get the hell going, stumbling around looking for a gear.

It was GM's answer to the gas guzzler tax. thank the feds. If she shifts out of first before 15 or after 21 it should not do it. There is a way to hot wire the solenoid plug to eliminate it.

You can also pause in neutral for a moment and then it will go into 2nd. I hate it. It's the stupidest addition to a "muscle" car I've ever seen.

Once you know it's there and know how to avoid it, you can drive it where it hardly ever happens. If it still bothers you a skip shift eliminator can be installed. It sucks, but I would much rather have this than a $1500 gas guzzler tax.

Like everyone said, skip shift. There are A LOT of ways to avoid that...

1: Rev up above 2k rpm to go into 2nd (I even was able to do it @ 1900)
2: Pause for a moment on neutral then go into second (like Bobfly said)
3: Skip shift eliminator physical mod
4: Tuner can deactivate it.

At first I had some getting used to and always did hit 1-4 lock which was a little annoying but now, I RARELY hit it.

I had difficulty with it when I first started driving my SS. A month later and I rarely ever get locked out of second now. If you do what others have suggested, you will be fine.

I noticed that it really comes on with how much throttle you give it.. I messed around and gave it slow throttle over 2k rpm and it still came on. My fix for it is descent amount of throttle around 1500k rpm and it won't come on.

3: Skip shift eliminator physical mod (dealer told me it would void powertrain warranty if they see it. Can just take it off before service tho)

4: Tuner can deactivate it. (Can a tuner do this without flashing the ECU?? If so that would be great!)

No, it has to be flashed in order to save the change. Skip-shift has multiple parameters associated with it, speed, throttle percentage, coolant temp. You may notice it never happens when the engine is still cold. It may be different on the Gen6 ECU but one of the skip-shift engagement parameters is engine coolant temp and therefore one way to tune it out is to configure the skip shift to only engage if the coolant temp is say, 300 degrees, which should never happen and effectively disables it. At least that is how I did it on my 2002 Z06.

Bummer! lol

Well, perhaps the eliminator will work and just take it off before service.
