If you were to do it again... Auto or Manual?

So after driving my friends ZL1 from Ohio and using a stick for the first time in awhile its definitely something I could get used to. Funny thing is by the time I was getting sed to it I had to go back to my SS and my left foot was constantly looking for the clutch for the rest of that day... literally I was pressing my left foot on the floorboard everytime I started the car. Just became natural.

Anyway...
Advantages of the Auto .. on paper seem to be running faster quarter mile times.. still have auto shift available and while not as functional as a stick, gives you the ability to hold gears when you need to.

Some have said in the case of the ZL1 that the A10 seems to be much faster than the M6. Does this hold true on paper or is it just perception? If it is on paper, is there any advantage to getting a M6 today?

I guess reason I'm asking is because if I one day upgrade to a ZL1, I'm not sure which transmission I would get it in. Love the engaged feeling of the stick but the responsiveness of the auto isnt anything to sneeze at.

If you race all the time get an auto.

Stick for me. (again)

The day they stop making manual transmissions, everyone will cry they want one.

Once you drive a stick and realize how much control it gives you, its very difficult to go back to an auto. Without a torque converter in the way, you have a much more direct mechanical connection to your car and it's much more engaging/fun. The auto is more daily drive-able in low speed driving and city traffic, and its nice on the track to just be able to forget about shifting. But once you have the bug to go manual it won't go away until you have one. That was the case for me. I had an auto 6th gen and I realized I was very unhappy.

If the damn GM A8 didn't have so many shudder issues, it would be a great auto IMO. Overall the new automatics are much more appealing with paddle shifters, manual modes, aggressive shift ponts, 8 and 10 speed trans, etc....Years ago this wasn't the case, which made a manual trans an easy pick. That's just my opinion

I had a SS with A8 and traded it for a SS with a M6. Main reason was concerns about the A8 longevity.

I liked the A8. It shifted smooth and I enjoyed tapping the throttle to engage the performance shift mode. Letting the car downshift on its own in that mode was awesome. Up shifts under acceleration were amazing.

The manual makes it easy to spontaneously hold 2nd gear for the pleasure. Plus the engagement factor.

If I were to upgrade to a ZL1, I'd get the A10 because it is as street car first (faster). If I were to upgrade to a ZLE ...M6.

After having daily driven a SS with auto and manual, I can honestly say both are enjoyable in different ways.

I specifically chose to get the manual, due to concerns about problems with the automatic. I don't regret it.

I needed a car while the Camaro was in winter storage, so I've gotten a low-mileage Lexus LS430 with automatic, which I am now using as my daily driver.

I will never track my car or bring it to the drag strip, I just want to enjoy driving it, so stick for me all day every day. It's so second nature at this point that I don't mind daily driving in the Va/DC area, and when I get an open road it's very satisfying.

I drove manuals only for 25 years, the Camaro was my first auto other than my wifes car and couldn't be happier. I drive a ton and I just got burnt out shifting all day in traffic and still being slower than an automatic. Just getting in and going is nice. Some cars I only would get in a stick, the Camaro is not one of them.

M6 for me in my 2017 ZL1! Auto may be faster but I feel in more control with a manual and like was said the day manuals are not built then everyone will want one!!

Personally I would probably go manual to avoid the shudder issues, but I have noticed that the shudder has not occurred if I always use paddles on the A8 (Its been 3-4 months) and I never got a fluid flush yet.

I drove manuals for 30 years and decided to go auto this time mainly for drag racing. If this car wasn't a drag car I'd probably have gone manual again but autos are better at the strip.

I will undoubtedly be upgrading to a ZL1 within a year or two and this time around I think I'll be going with the A10. Not that I don't like the 6SPD in the 1LE, but I think I want to finally try something different and people seem to really like the A10.
