safe to start an untuned s/c car?
So just looking to pick some brains here. Im going to install a 2.9l whipple here soon and wont be using the cann'ed tune from whipple as im dyno tuned for my current mods (cam/lt/other basic bolt ons).
Question i got is, does anyone know (not guesses) if it will be an issue for me to start the car and let it idle to check for leaks and servicing level? I plan to do the start using my stock injectors not the higher lbs injectors with the kit, just to make sure i got no leaks and top off my radiator. I'm gona tow my car to my tuner after just dont want any suprises while im at the dyno (bout 1 hour from my house). Thanks for any help guys

If it was me, I'd keep the supplied Whipple injectors in place, load the canned Whipple tune, and start the car to check for leaks. Once satisfied that there are no leaks, you could either have it towed to your tuner, OR drive it (gently) to your tuner. The programmer that Whipple supplies will record your current tune, before loading in the canned tune, so you won't lose it, if you were concerned about that.
When I did my Whipple, I did a cam swap at the same time. Just loaded the canned tune, and drove it easy, across town, 15 miles, to my tuner. ZERO issues. Enjoy your new power and the follow-on PERMAGRIN!! |

Thanks for the input. I order the kit with no tune (save some cash) and if i start the car with the whipple injectors, the ecu will supply fuel like it was my stock injectors, washing my cylinder walls with fuel(im already on the rich side). I know that will end bad. My biggest problem is lack of knowledge of what else might happen with a uncalbriated ecu for the added air volume vs my current tune (ie running lean). My idle is currently at 1k rpm for my cam and not sure if that will cause issues with the maf/map and fuel, due to the SC.
If nothing else i will just install what i can and drive to the tuner and finish the install, but thats kind of a last choice option. I always seem to forget something when i do stuff like that

I wouldn't start the car without a good base tune. Not worth it.

You can probably start it with your stock injectors but I wouldn't with the larger ones.
If you want, your tuner may be able to build a base tune (if you have your injector flow rate chart) and send your pcm to him.

As long as the injectors are stock no problem.

Injectors aren't easy to swap with the Whipple.

Worst case, you buy an engine. You willing to take that chance? I don't think I'd take that chance but that's just me.
I'd ask your tuner what they think and go from there.

if you are just installing the blower and nothing else it will be fine to idle. If you change injectors dont.
