Hearing and feeling a thump thump thump.

Hi all it's been awhile. So on to business. I own an 11 llt 6 speed manual. I'm feeling a hard thump thump thump and hearing it. I believe that it is coming from the differential. I've seen fluid leaking from it as well. The thumping happens more the faster it goes. What do you think is wrong with it and what needs to be done? It's been sitting for a few months since it's happened. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Leaking diff is not good and needs to be addressed, but I think diff noises would be more of a whirring and or whinning gear/ bearing type of noise, don't know about thump-thump type noise coming from a diff.

I had a similar noise in my 1999 Firebird. There was a distinct thump noise directly related to speed and it was without a doubt in the rear end. You could jack it up put the car in gear and hear it. I had 7 mechanics with combined over 200 years of experience look at it and not one could find the noise. The conclusion was drive it till something actually breaks, well it never did until the day I sold the car for all I know it's still out there thumping somewhere. Not that this is the same scenario as you, but some things are just noises with no real reason. Since you have fluid leaking that would be a huge concern for me.

There isn't much fluid in the diff I think only a liter if that so you can't afford to lose any really.

I was also told that it could be a CV joint in the differential? I myself am not sure. The thumping is super aggressive. The faster I went the more the thumping would go.

I had a really bad front end shake on my 03 Monte Carlo and it ended up being the CV joint.

is the fluid coming from the differential yoke?could the pinion seal have started to leak due to bad bearings allowing play at the yoke?
