Resonator delete?
I've got Magnaflow Catback Exhaust, but I want louder.. Is resonator delete a route to go?
One place quoted me 150 the other says 750 lol. Will I have a check engine light come on? |

$150 sounds about right. $750 is highway robbery.

My answer to that would be pure speculation. You would be safe to assume that it would be louder. I assume you would also get a harsher note since the resonator can take the edge off of a sound.
Do you have an LS3 or L99? If you have an L99 the resonators will reduce the sound of AFM kicking in. I have been told that this sound is unbearably annoying without resonators. My exhaust has no resonators .

If LS3 it will have a more hollow sound and louder a bit.Did it on my old 2010 v6. only $60 to remove the two and add in sections of pipe.

You want headers, they perfectly louder, the resonator wont make it louder, more just change the tone

No they are further back in the exhaust. L99 have a huge resonator but the LS3 resonators are straight through and removing them wont make much difference sounds wise. High flow cats/stock manifolds or LTs make the most sound difference.

I removed the resonators, and changed the h pipe to an x pipe. I notice very little (if any) difference on volume. I was pretty disappointed. I did it myself, if I remember right it cost me about $120. Link to the thread in my sig, should be videos of the before and after.

Save your money and buy a set of short tube headers if you want sound or long tube headers if you want sound and power. You will also want high flow cats to prevent a CEL from coming on. With shorties you might not need to tune, but do not quote me. On the other hand if you use long tube headers and do not tune you will leave a noticeable amount of power on the table. The man to ask would be Ted Jannetty. I started out with axle back exhaust. SLP loudmouths. I thought it sounded pretty good as it was. I started looking to do a cam swap and was redirected to doing headers to flow properly when I was ready for a cam swap. I ended up doing the headers and the sound is perfect. I have headers and high flow cats into stock pipes and resonator into the axle back 3 inch exhaust. Can I make more power if I redo the whole exhaust? Probably, but am I? No. I am too cheap and I like the way it sounds now. I will eventually do a cam though. Save the money and do the headers of your choice and high flow cats and you will love the way it sounds I guarantee it.

Resonator delete
For anyone thinking of removing the resonator....DO IT!
I had originally only added MagnaFlow mufflers...was very disappointed with the lack of sound. Then added a K&N intake...it helped but I was still disappointed. Just had the resonator removed yesterday. Now she sounds like a true muscle car! Was inexpensive and helped immensely. Spent about 450$ for the mufflers, and the removal of the resonator. And their is NO annoying drone from the AFM as I have the automatic L99. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants their SS to sound like its supposed to! |
