My take on the ZL1 vs 2013 GT500 debate..
I am not sure how to post a video but here is a link to CTS-V coupe vs current GT500 drag race: http://youtu.be/QW-qF_Xzjl4 . The CTS-V comes in weighing 4254 compared to the GT500's 3920. The CTS-V beat it by .3 seconds in the quarter mile and .4 seconds 0-60.
Now shave off 100 pounds of the CTS-V, add 24 HP, and put on some wide sticky tires (The ZL1) and you should be able to shave off .3-.4 seconds off it's time, mostly due to the wider, stickier tires. The PS2 tires that come on the CTS-V are good, but not as wide and IMO, not as sticky. I can easlily see the ZL1 running a sub 12 second run. My guess 11.8-11.9. Again, all IMO. Ford can add as much power as they want to the 2013 GT500, the car simply cannot put it to the ground. So now it will be even harder to hookup consistenlty, yet alone at all. I can see it doing the 1/4 mile in the 12 second range much like the ZL1, it will just be a whole lot harder to do so consistently. Not to mention the car will still have the anxient live axle setup, which Ford has improved upon, but still inferior to the ZL1s independent rear suspension. Add all this to the skinny tires that they can fit on it and you have yourself a tire smoker. This is for people who are worried about buying the ZL1 to have the fastest muscle car. I for one am not, but will still enjoy spanking the new GT500s "consistently". And you'll have yourself a nicer looking, presumably better driving car with more bells and whistles. Just my 2 cents.

I've driven the GT500 and the problems I encountered with the car:
A) Straight axle - Not the best solution especially with lots of power in a twisty road. B) Front too heavy - Step on the break and turn at the same time. You loose end before you can blink your eyes. C) To me, the car doesn't give confidence that you can push her. This is where you loose the enjoyment, because you don't trust her what she is going to do. |

Weight distribution on the GT500 manual is 56/44

I also read from Car and Driver that the 2013 GT500 will be upgrading to the same Eaton supercharger that is on the ZL1...
Guess, if you can't beat them, join them.

Enough of these threads already! Let's just wait until both cars are on the streets and get them both on the same track on the same day and let the chips fall where they may.

The problem here is twofold as I see it.
First, we don't know what changes are going to appear on the 2013 GT500, but among them are rumored to be fairly significant changes in suspension and tires including much wider rubber and a good deal more power. Second, none of that matters, because the truth is that anybody who buys either of these cars for what will almost certainly be a minor performance advantage over the other has too much disposable income and time on their hands. Can you tell me which was faster through the 1/4 mile, an 71 Camaro SS LT-1 or a 71 Boss 351? How about a 70 429SCJ Torino or a 70 LS6 Chevelle? If you knew that, stock for stock, the Boss 351 could outrun the SS LT-1, would you somehow find the LT-1 Camaro less desirable than you did before you knew that? Buy a ZL1 because it pushes your buttons, not because it has (or doesn't) the lowest numbers on the spec sheet sidebar in the latest comparison. |
