Is a CAI really worth the investment?

It seems to me that a low restriction (e.g., K&N) air filter placed in the stock air box would do just as well as these after market CAI products.

The stock air box is fully enclosed which blocks the engine compartment heat and is fed from the front of the car, so I'd think a high-flow air filter would be sufficient.

Am I wrong?

Depends which one you get. Jannetty Racing did an excellent review of a bunch of them for us. Check it out and make your own decision.

Check out our review of the LSR intake. It is worth 20HP over a car with a tune. BIG GAINS!

Whether you think a aftermarket CAI is worth the $$ or not, is purely up to you. Jannetty also did a test with a drop in K&N and showed that zero HP gains. The K&N may filter better than the OEM filter but it doesn't free up HP. The HP gains aren't from a better filter, but a better design.

Really? Do you have a link for that test? Cuz I was curious myself after the test of the CAIs gm
High tech did and second fastest acceleration was the stock air box. Maybe it just wasn't that great of a test?

I interpreted the results the same. As far as I read, the stock box produced the second best acceleration times. Seems to me they also made a comment about how good the stock box was...

You nailed it. At least one intake wasn't even properly installed.

Horsepower gains produced by aftermarket intakes are not the result of better air filtration, its from creating a more efficient path for getting air into the motor. There are a lot of ways this is accomplished but one of the obvious ones is that they get rid of the stock tubing. Stock intake tubing is riddled with baffles and extra chambers that slow down the air and create turbulence, not conducive to creating max power.
