Wouldn't that affect all gear changes? And wouldn't I feel a little sponginess in the travel of the clutch pedal?

Not necessarily. Especially if it happened gradually, you wouldn't notice.

That's what I was thinking and why I also brought up the throw out bearing. Do you keep it in first as stop lights? Air is also a possibility.
