Manual Guy Thinking Auto - Tell U Why
I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on a new 2011 2SS. I drove the V6 Manual and a 2SS Auto. No one seems to have a Manual SS. Anyone I discovered that when shifting the manual it was very easy to hit the rev limiter in the car. This takes a lot of the fun out of a manual. The Auto has a Sports mode. Mash the pedal and go. Since I haven't driven the Manual 2SS I don't know if it feels faster and if the rev limiter is a non-issue. Since I don't tend to watch the tach and I like to drive the car hard, at times, I wonder if I'm better off with an Auto. Also, does the Auto have a rev limiter with the paddles? How limiting is the torque management on the Auto? Does taking the traction control off turn off TM?
Any opinionis from those of you who have driven both trannies? Last edited by traderfjp; 08-07-2010 at 12:55 PM. |

I have heard there are testosterone enhancing medications that might help. Check with your doctor...

The auto does have rev limiters w/ the "useless" paddles. TM is very limiting but a quick tune really opens it up. Traction control does not turn off TM... only a tune will do that. Bottom line is get the Auto tuned and you will have a beast...

While you're figuring out how to improve your launch, could you check if all my taillights work?

Just remembered when you go with the auto tranny it's hard to maintain a humble nature.

Well, you do have the added weight of your European Shoulder Bag to deal with. I guess you'd better go with the auto. Besides, you'll have one hand free at all times to check your makeup.

I was originally looking at the M6 but, I decided on the A6 due to a right shoulder injury. If could do it all over again I would get the M6 for the LS3 engine. The L99 is a nice engine but GM had a real brain fart with the AFM system (auto fuel management) that shuts down four cylinders when coasting. Unless you plan to tune out AFM (and void your warranty) your have to live with hesitation coming out of AFM and drone if you ever go to an aftermarket exhaust system. The stock A6 exhaust system has an extra resonator in an attempt to quiet down the AFM drone.
Now if GM offered an LS3 with an A6, that would be sweet. |

my .02 cents, get the 2011 SS manual since you already know about the V6 manual.
Shifting at 4000 rpm should scare you plenty This is my reasoning: 1st 6500 rpm 52 MPH 2nd 6500 rpm 76 MPH 3rd 6500 rpm 110 MPH 4th 6400 rpm 155 MPH* 5th 5400 rpm 155 MPH* 6th 3650 rpm 155 MPH* *The computer in the 2010 Camaro limits top speed to 155MPH. Have the A6, regret not getting the 6 speed. However, due to my dealer being a . . .let's say dick to put it nicely, I get to trade in the A6 for a new 2011 6 speed. So Happy and to answer the questions that will obviously come: bought an early production model 2010 that had the little glue on weights. Took it in for the TSB, dealer repaired it incorrectly and ended up doing more damage to the brake system then good. I talked to Chevrolet, they agree that the dealer is an idiot and I get a replacement. happy happy joy joy

I've got the M6 and have never hit the rev limiter. I have run her pretty hard and ran her up to the red line and maybe a touch over. You can turn off all traction control and really burn through some tires if you want. You can also put the M6 into sport mode to help optimize your launch if you have some trouble breaking loose. I also just cant see paying a grand more for 26 less HP.
