Added X-Pipe and Now.......

So I just had a tru x-pipe installed to complet my exhaust

It sounds great! The only down side is a prominate drone at 1.6K and lower RPM's. Is this normal? If it is than I can live with it by down shifting to keep the RPM's up. Or are the 40 series are too much?

A set of whistle tips will keep you from hearing that nasty drone. Works better than J pipes and a LOT cheaper.

I tuned out the AFM some time ago. I thought the J pipes were to help with the running on 4 cylinder drone? Does the LS3 have this issue?

Ditto: whistle tips ?

Drone and afm aren't mutually inclusive. You can have one without the other. J pipes cut to the proper length eliminate a desired frequency.

I just keep my RPM's up closer to 2000. No drone here. HAHAH

J pipes in the proper length and place should eliminate drone at the problematic RPM. There's a formula you use to calculate that. AFM sound is mechanical and can't be eliminated. It can be lessened, but not totally eliminated. Aftermarket exhausts make your exhaust louder. This also makes AFM louder if you still have it enabled. Series 40 FM's are loud and will drone. Typically, the louder the exhaust, the more prone to drone.

Ok, make sense certain rpm's = non desired resonance frequencies depending on the make up of the exhaust system.

Thanks for the info!

Once the Xpipe is added, drone usually occurs at a lower frequency. If you were to go toward the helmholtz route, it would be shorter.

Once again, grasshoppers, the "simplified" formula for determining the length of a Helmholtz quarter-wave chamber dealing with the elimination of a known resonance frequency is as follows:

The speed of sound in feet per second (say, 1072feet/second)
divided by
The frequency you wish to eliminate (say, 128cycles/second)
equals
8.375feet/cycle (numbers divide/seconds cancel out)
This is the length of a full wave form; much too big to work with under a vehicle.
To get a quarter-wave length, divide 8.373feet/cycle by 4 to get 2.09373feet/quarter-wave length.
Multiply 2.09373feet/quarter-wave by 12inches/foot to get the chamber length of 25.125".

Tube diameter does not affect frequency, only the amount of attenuation.
This worked back in 2009, and it still works today.

Be sure to use your own target frequency in the formula.
The speed of sound figure is not going to vary enough to worry about. We're not rocket scientists.

REMEMBER: Be sure to use your own target frequency in the formula.
