3.91 Gear install price a joke

I called a Portland OR Chevy dealer and asked them how much to put in a 3.91 gears in my differential. They quoted me $2800 for the install even when I told them I have the gears. I told him you got to be kidding? He said we tear it down and replace all the gears? I told him there is only one gear and I already have it. He still stated he has to replace all the gears. I'm scratching my head and asked him, your not talking about the transmission are you and he stated no. I told him I could get a brand new 1LE dif for less than that. He told me we have to warranty the product. I told him forget it and hung up. Is this nuts or what?

Sounds like a shop that does not want to do the job... I paid $340 for mine to be installed

Quoted for $900+ around here from my dealerships -
Let me know if you find a good shop for what I see others have paid with no problems.
...Like the guy above it seems like all of them are on the east cost with the good install price.

There are two gears in the differential. A pinion gear and a ring gear. You were surprised the stealership is crazy overpriced? You must be new to cars.

Don't walk; RUN away from that idiot! I paid $600 labor to a reputable shop for everything (dropping the pumpkin, setup, and reinstall) back when I had my gears changed.

I paid $250 for labor for the ring and pinion install, $75 to install PFADT bushings, and $100 to have the billet endcaps machined. $461 out the door. Really no need for a warranty on the diff. Just have a differential shop build it and install it yourself. Follow their break in procedure. If something goes wrong down the road, replace it. No big deal.

No, not new to cars and yes I know there are two gears, what I meant to say is one set of gears. I was assuming everyone especially the mechanics know when I say to swap out my gears out with a set of 3.91 they don't repond that we swap out all the other gears as well. I took it as the dif has more than 1 set of gears. I know it has to have more than just 1 gear to make things work, one gear alone is worthless, right?

Paid $750 for complete 1LE diff and installed it myself in about 3 hours in my sloped driveway on jackstands with a standard socket set. Install price zero dollars.

For $2800 you could buy a brand new complete 1LE differential, have it installed, and have $1300 or so left to over for other goodies. That is a joke.

yep, unless its a recall or warranty issue. A dealership is the last place you want to have any work done.

Up here, they have the least experienced mechanics and that is where they make a lot of their profit. 1LE gears are a highly recommended for any M6 SS.
