Installed Rear ZL1 Sway Bar - Banjo Bolt hitting on V6 Stock Brakes

Hi Everyone,

I have a 2LT/RS Camaro, with stock V6 brakes. We just installed the rear ZL1/1LE sway bar last night on my ride. But now I'm having problems with the banjo bolt hitting and making my braking not so fun to say the least...

We are currently working on fixing this situation by putting new rear brake pads on. First of all hopefully this will fix it, but if not, does anyone have any suggestions? We did move the brake line a little bit, so i dont have any issues with that.

Thanks so much!

From a Pfadt Thread: The last thing in the world that you want is to make contact with a banjo bolt and either kink or break that brake line.

Can you post a pic of it hitting along with the thickness of your pads? I am curious how far the pads will have to wear in order for this to happen. You can also change the rotors too if it is worn. That will give you a little more clearance but at that point, you might as well switch to Brembo.

I have heard of some doing new pads and it gives you clearance for a while, but the only real fix is to upgrade to the SS calipers.

Best regards,

Yes. those V6 calipers were huge.

but doesn't some of the clearance come from the fact that the Brembos are "taller" to accommodate the bigger rotor?

Here are my pics, my undercarriage is filthy, was on a rock road in the county over the weekend.

Found my brake pads were at about 50%. And the bolt had been hitting the sway bar, decreasing my braking power forsure. So we changed out the pads, and shaved down the bolt a little. And my car stops like a champ now! Working on saving money for Brembos for the long haul though.....

Brake pads

Rear bolt touching sway bar

Partial shaved off bolt

Final Caliper and bolt clearance

If you remember I told you that may happen, start saving for Brembo takeoffs.... as soon as the pads wear it will happen again. I will keep my eye out for you and some brembos.

Thanks for the pictures. Here is an idea. If the brake pads are identical inside and outside, you can replace the outside pads only to push the calipers out and don't replace the half worn inside pads. When the new outside pads is half worn and inside pad is fully worn, you can move the half worn outside pad to the inside and use the remaining pair of new pads on the outside. That way you don't have to keep buying pads.

Oh no problem at all. Not too many folks had mentioned having problems like this, and I know there are quite a few of us V6's that have this set up with stock brakes. But that sounds like a great idea, thanks!

Oh i see the issue you have lowering springs correct? This changes the angle of the rear sway bar causing the interference.
