If ls3 was so much better why are there so few on the fast list compared to l99?

I thought the L99 was a cool engine. Technology going toward the future. AFM is nothing new but having VVT is and I thought it was what GM will be doing in the future because of emissions. If VVT was available with a manual then I would've got that instead. It's the way of the future and I guessed right cuz look @ the new LT1 and LT4.

I would think the 3.27 gear in the rear would nearly negate the lower first gear.
When the Camaro first came out, the rod magazines said the L99 with AFM was put in the auto cars to improve mileage and avoid the gas guzzler tax. Perhaps VVT was added to improve "under the curve" HP so it was not slower than an LS3 car. Most of the auto swaps I see on this and other boards are not stock LS3 cars swapping in 6l80e's. They are 1000 HP cars swapping in stronger 4L80e's and Turbo 400s. In drag racing consistency matters and autos have been the preferred transmission for a long time. (no such thing as a manual trans brake) Neither the stock TR6060 or 6l80e are going to hold up to 1000hp lauches with slicks so to say LS3 owners are switching to autos is misleading because they aren't switching to 6l80e's and 6L80e owners aren't keeping them at the super high HP levels either. Where a manual really shines is on the street when adding HP. If you install a wicked cam with a manual, you don't have to install a new converter with it so the car stays in it's power band. You also don't have to put up with the converter slippage of that stall on your drive to get milk. With our cars, if you go over 700hp, you have to put a better clutch in with the TR6060. With the 6l80e, you have to put a stronger transmission in at that horse power level. As for stock 1/4 mile times, I really don't care about a tenth or two here and there because I'm not stock. I can't afford to pay somebody to build me a wild 1400HP race car, but I can afford to build my own nasty street car as long as I spend my money where it make the most sense and IMO having a manual helps me do that.

And I think the "who outruns who" discussion is based on a 1/4 mile, standing start, drag race. I don't think there's any question that a LS3 should beat a L99 on a road course. And by the way... I'm talking equally modified (or bone stock) comparisons. LS3 and L99 are both great setups right from the factory.

Oh come on, Kevin... you know we have to go through this every month or so. It's all good, and sometimes members (especially new members) learn about stuff like VVT, AFM, etc.

I drag raced for a good while with a M6. I enjoyed the challenge. I didnt need a stall, put the engine at the desired RPMs and let go. With practice a driver can get really good at shifting and be pretty consistent. |
