Buying out of state car, smog requirements for CA

Possibly buying a car out of state, 2013 Camaro 2SS.

I've read a bunch about YF5 and FE9 and 50 state legal.
The sticker the salesperson texted me reads " California class/ standards: PC /ULEV qualified"

Is this enough to register and smog in the state of Ca?

Thanks!

Even a catch can is illegal in Cali. If it has any engine mods, it will likely fail the visual.

If it's stock, there shouldn't be any problems. All 5th gens were compliant to Cali standards when built, I'm pretty sure.

As already stated, all cars sold in the US these days meet CARB requirements (i.e. they will pass California requirements). If the car you are looking at has the stickers stating it meets CA emissions and has not had any mods, it will pass. If you want to be 100% sure, you can have the seller take in and have it checked to see if it meets CA requirements. I know in Nevada you can have this done and would guess you can have it done in any state. The only thing you would need to negotiate is who would pay for the check.

At the DMV they do look for VIN matching, smog paperwork, and that sticker that says it is cali compliant with smog. You have a few extra steps with DMV getting it into their system sort of half registered then getting the smog paperwork then back to DMV for getting the final registration. Something simple like a missing underhood compliant sticker could be big buttpain btw.

The DMV website has better info the last few years update if you google it.

Just thought of one other can of worms, if the vehicle was ever registered in Cali then taken out of state or otherwise not properly de-registered or "non-operational" registered, you could be on the hook for years of back registration and penalties. It's something to be aware of because it could be thousands $.

I would buy it, just make sure about prior registrations and all stock engine and exhaust and underhood sticker in place. I'm thinking if it were me I'd pay the huge $20 fee to run a carfax after they gave you the VIN to be sure of history and registration locations.

You only need to worry if it is a fleet use car for police or government they will do the bear min for smog in those states and most those car are smog exempt. I tried to get a newer taurus with the sho awd turbo ex cop car wouldn't pass smog in CA did not even have alot of the inspection stickers as well. Cars sold to the general public uave to pass smog standards in all 50 states. California is also responsible for odb1 and obd2 being regulation in cars as a added pain for out smog standards in state. If it not been touched or modified it's legal.

Once here any mods you want have to be approved ie have a carb sticker if it does improved airflow to the motor, exhaust anything after the cats is okay but depends of the shop doing the smog some get upset o er straight pipes and won't even look at your car others Dgaf.

From the Edmunds website:
There are many exceptions to registering non-CARB cars in CARB states. For example, here are the DMV rules and exemptions for registering non-CARB cars in California. Note that once a non-CARB vehicle has more than 7,500 miles, it is no longer considered new and can be registered in California, assuming it can pass the smog test.

Yes, there are mods that can pass. Most mods will not pass visual, e.g. even a simple catch-can is a fail for places that follow the rules.
IDK what your point was. Sounds to me like everyone who suggested no mods as a general rule of thumb is wrong. I think that's bad advice in the context of this thread. If the OP said "can I do cat-back mods" as the topic that's a different story. Or can I sneak this by...

I just moved from NJ to CA and had no problems. All I had to do before getting it smog tested is remove my CIA and put the OEM air box back in as it would have failed the visual. But to answer your question you should not have a problem if the car is stock. ie: no tunes, has it's cats, etc.
