Stock ZL1 217* IAT2 temps???

So I hooked up my dashlogic and set it to zl1 iat2 setting and after a 1/4 mile pull i was at 217* iat2 temp. Iat1 was at 86*. I wonder if this is reading correctly or am I missing something? It never pulled any timing which makes me wonder if this iat2# is correct?

Also my timing was right around 16-17 degrees. That normal as well?

The timing numbers are somewhat possible if the 217* you saw was shortly after a 1/4 mile pull (within a few seconds). IAT2 keeps rising for a brief period when you let off after a pull.

Just doing the math in a stock tune, it is possible to be around 16 degrees of timing in this situation (somewhere in the 14-16 range, anyway).

This assumes your temp at the actual point you rolled through the traps was lower than 217, and kept climbing (which it normally does) before you looked at the gauge. It probably goes without saying, but to get anywhere near those temps, something has to be malfunctioning in the HEX system.

Well, if you do all the math from base timing to ECT adder, to PE/COT adder, along with the various multipliers, it can get you there when IAT's are in the 180-210 area. Go do the math and see for yourself. I'm assuming you have a log if you somehow know that it's not pulling timing? Anyway, best of luck. I hope you figure out the culprit, be it an erroneous reading or a faulty HEX system.

I was using the dashlogic to read all the info, but I also have efilive I can hook up to verify. I'll probably start by doing that today

Check your intercooler/heat exchanger coolant. Might be low. The pump won't turn on if the coolant is low. 217 IAT2's is extremely high, even for a hot day.

Finally got a minute today to go by the garage and check out my s/c coolant level. Pulled the cap off and sure enough it's dry! Going to get some dexcool and start the car tomorrow to see if the pump is even kicking since it's low on coolant.

Thanks for the heads up VRZL113

As soon as air hits the pump it cavitates and shuts off. Definitely need to keep it full. Get an aftermarket reservoir which makes filling much easier.

So I verified it was low on coolant. Filled it best I could. Still must be air in the system. Start the car pump runs for about 18 seconds and shuts off and does not come back on. Whats the cheapest tool I can get to purge the system?

If it does that, Its still low on coolant. Once you get it filled, it will continue to run at temperature

Right it's full to the top though so I must have air trapped. I think I need to get a tool to properly vacuum the system. Can I rent one or anybody know of a cheap one to buy?

Get a 3/8 hex extension and loosen but DO NOT remove the HX vent plug through the front grille upper left facing the car. Be sure the Extension fits well or you will strip the head. Now with the vent open also open your fill plug at SC, that should allow a gravity bleed. Close the HX vent and refill, repeat until full.

Or as mentioned get a reservoir. I have the MAC tool vacuum I paid 230 never used it as I have a lift so I just remove the speed clip on the lower pump HX line open my reservoir and SC fill plug and drain the whole thing into a bucket. Refill through reservoir until it begins to fill, then fill remainder through SC fill plug unit reservoir is full, run motor with reservoir open add fluid as needed.

so ended up filling the system through the bottom up with an electric fluid transfer pump that I already had in the garage. Worked great. Then just to make sure I had all air out I did basically like the video above but with a fluid pump.

No air in system and now pump stays running constantly. Also temps after a full 1/4 pull + are under 140. Dropped 80 degrees lol.
