How does this work for newbies? Show up and follow car in front for length of the run? Anything else important I would need to know?

You have to register to attend on Richmond International Raceway website. It cost $20 which goes to a great cause. I'm sure you could register in person but I don't know? They may be trying to get a head count before hand?
