Does anybody do mountain biking???
I've been looking into getting a mountain bike and start doing some trail riding however a majority of the riding will be done on the street. Therefore I have been looking into some mid range bikes that are well suited for a beginner. I have decided to go with a hardtail bike just because of the type of riding i'm going to be doing.
My top choice is the Trek 3700 Disc. I can't decide whether to go with the 2011 or 2012. The main complaint on the 2011 is the fron shock however they have upgraded that in the 2012 model. Anyone have any insight for me on this? |

Well, I have a little advice, as I am not up on beginner/mid level bikes...
Get the rear suspension... Its worth it! Even on the streets, or light trails it make the ride a whole lot more comfortable. If you decide to get serious and go all out, I highly HIGHLY recommend a bike from Santa Cruz. They are pricey, but hold their value for years. Jason

I have been contemplating one, used to be into mb big but got out for awhile. Had a Klein Pinnacle from 91-'09! Anyway, one thing I found when researching bikes is that many full suspensions have lockouts on the shocks for street riding. Not sure if you are aware of hat as I had no idea until I started looking.

I def. need to look into the full suspension that lock out. The santa cruz seem way to pricey. Maybe if I really wanted to get into the sport but right now, I just don't have that cash.
Do you think I would be disappointed with a hardtail? If I don't go with a hardtail, what type of bike would you recommend for about 60% on road and 40% off road? |

Just checked out some of the full suspensions and they are wayyyyy out of my price range. I think i'm going to have to stick with a hardtail until I decide that I want to get more into the sport

Get one with the fox rear shock. It has lockout for climbing/road pedaling.
Hardtails are fine, but I need the soft ride! Lol I bought an iron mountain full suspension, around $700 5 years ago. Good bike for around town, mild trails. The Santa Cruz us for the hardcore trails. YouTube "downieville". That's where I ride alot. Oh yeah, get disc brakes!! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I have a Cannondale Jekyll (full suspension). If you can afford full suspension (with lockouts front/rear) you won't regret it and disc brakes are a must..

Had a Raleigh Talus for a while, rode it through a couple trails. Then it got stolen...

haha yeah d'ville is no joke... Plenty of places that if you fall, you fall to your death!
17 miles, 4500 feet downhill. The pro racers do it in 30 mins!! I am more around 1.5 hours! lol I would look at a "hybrid bike" Its a mtn bike frame, but has skinnier, street tires on it. That will be much better for commuting, but the tires are decent enough to get into some dirt. Then later on, you can upgrade to better tires if you want to go further with the sport. Hope that helps?! J

I appreciate the help from everyone. Got some more research to be doing.
J, I do hear that the tires really determine what your bike is used for so I will def. be keeping that in mind. I'll update this when I decide. I live on Long Island so if anybody knows of any good places around here, please lmk. Thanks Last edited by pgviper; 06-29-2011 at 08:04 AM. |
