We Californian's really need to have our legislators change the emission laws! All that should be required is that the vehicle pass the 'sniffer' test, no matter if a mod has been installed or not. That or at least, incorporate an additional 'performance' fee for having mod's on your vehicle. Definitely would save me a lot of time every 2 years swapping out parts just to pass the visual inspection~lol

Yes, a very logical argument and it would still protect the air quality that the law was created for. However, there is more to it than just emissions now isn't there?

He didn't say he would answer, just that he had not been asked specifically. Maybe it's like the 20 questions game. Does your state start wtih a vowel, specifically. lol.

Keep in mind the smog requirements are different in different parts of Cali.

I am with you. Would like to pass with the LT's on. I have the Catalytic Converter. So it shouldn't be a smog issue.

If you live in or can register your car in certain rural mountain counties, you only need to pass smog when you sell your car. If you plan on keeping it, mod all you want.

These counties do not require smog check.
Alpine
Amador
Calaveras
Del Norte
Humboldt
Imperial
Inyo
Lake
Lassen
Mariposa
Mendocino
Modoc
Mono
Plumas
Sierra
Siskiyou
Trinity
Tuolumne
In order to register you car in one of these non-smog CA counties you would still need to have your car pass smog once (to register it in said county) then you can mod away to your heart's desire.

False. As a smog nerd that is incorrect. All CARB smog standards are the same.

Not all counties require a biannual inspection, but all counties within California require the same smog inspection standards when you transfer the title of a vehicle. I bought a 1970 240Z due to this crap, if there was a better (legal) way I would have found it.

Additionally, the lack of a scheduled biannual inspection does NOT make the car smog exempt. If I find the wrong officer when driving my 240Z (or if I was in a "no biannual smog county") they could refer me to BAR and force me to make the car emission compliant again. Be kind when you get pulled over and this is very unlikely, but it is still possible.
